CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle 3 Review articles (Continued from page 1) advisor of The Review, said Max well had checked some of the facts and found a number wrong. Maxwell, as dean, had access to verification that he and Miss Wallace didn’t, Eilers said. “I agree with Maxwell whole heartedly that you don’t run state ments which aren’t facts, even if they are feelings,” he said. Eilers said he hadn’t read the copy word for word because by reading it, he would be censoring it. The call from the dean’s office was the first notice that anything was amiss, Miss Wallace said. She and Eilers talked with Jim Lindsey, chairman of the Student Publications Board, who told them he wouldn’t touch the sloppy copy she had sent down and was send ing it to the dean to settle things once and for all. He said the copy contained misspelled words, gram mar errors and sentence frag ments. The copy was typed, and edited with standard copy editing marks. The copy was turned over to Lane Stephenson, associate direc tor of University Information by J. Frank Tucker, superintendent of the A&M press. Stephenson said he took it to Lindsey because of the sloppiness. Lindsey’s only comment was that the deans were charged by the president to handle the edi torial content of the magazine. Tucker said he took the copy to Stephenson because of the way it was written. Words were left out, he said and sometimes it didn’t make sense. “Also there was one article we didn’t know whether they wanted to run,” he said. “You have to be very careful about what you say and how you say it in a stu dent publication. Sometimes we wonder whether the editors and advisors read it. That’s why we didn’t send it back to the editor or whoever wrote it.” Tom Rowell, A&M Press art supervisor, who brought the copy to Tucker’s attention did not, mention this, however. “The copy would have been most difficult for typesetters to set,” he said. “We have nothing to do with content. We work with each editor each year. With every issue things improve. I’m sure things would have improved with Janie, too. The students just don’t have the time to turn in perfect copy.
