Jimmy Sheffield takes
SWC punting lead
By CLIFFORD BROYLES
Although Jimmy Sheffield did
not kick but twice last Saturday
against Ohio State, the Aggie
punter got enough foot into the
ball to take over the Southwest
Conference punting lead with a
41.4 average on eight kicks.
Sheffield booted for 41 and 52
yards against the Buckeyes for
a 46.5 average to pass Southern
Methodist University’s sophomore
punter, Sam McClarty. McClarty
has a 41.1 average on 17 kicks.
The Aggies also held the lead
in three other categories after
statistics were released by the
SWC office this week.
Dave Elmendorf’s four punt
returns for an 18.3 average gives
Flag football
to start in CS
the senior from Houston the lead
over Jerry Moore of Arkansas.
Moore has a 14.2 yard return
average on five returns. Elmen-
dorf also had the longest return
this season when he ran one back
31 yards against Wichita State.
Sophomore quarterback Lex
James held onto the total offense
lead with his 271 yards passing
against the Buckeyes. James
now has 663 yards in three games
for the lead over Eddie Phillips,
who has 390 yards in two games.
His 271 yards against OSU left
him second to SMU’s passing
whizz Chuck Hixson, however.
Hixson completed only 13 of 24
passes for 150 yards last week.
McElroy rates second in two
categories, receiving and tandem
offense. His 13 pass receptions
for 318 yards is second to sopho
more Raymond Mapps of SMU,
who has caught 17 for 174 yards.
In tandem offense McElroy has
359 yards which is second to Gary
Hammond of the Mustangs.
Homer May, who caught two
touchdown passes from James
against the Buckeyes ranks tenth
in pass receiving having caught
seven for 154 yards and three
touchdowns.
In team statistics, the Aggies
lead in passing offense with an
average of 271 yards per game
which is well above SMU’s 206
yards per contest despite Hix
son’s passing lead over James.
That passing offense lead also
is good enough to put the Aggies
fifth in the nation in that depart
ment.
Play in the Bryan-College Sta
tion Junior Flag Football League
will get underway next week with
prospects looking up for one of
the best years ever for league
according to David Nava, who is
chairman for A&M students who
work with the youths in the
league.
The league is open to boys in
College Station from the ages of
6-12, Nava said.
Nava pointed out that the par
ents have been a tremendous help
this year in organizing the league.
Last year, he said, the league
was run completely by Aggies
and supported by donations from
funds and from different organi
zations.
“We now have about 20 coaches,
about half of which are Aggies,”
he said, adding that any Aggies
interested in helping with the
youth league are urged to come
out.
The league will play in two
areas on four different fields,
Nava said, and again stressed the
work done by parents to not only
organize but get ground keepers,
equipment managers and officials
for the league.
The league will play Monday
through Thursday afternoons this
fall and a similar league for
basketball will be set up during
the spring semester.

“We don’t have as many boys
as we have in past years, but
they’ve been working hard and
have a real good attitude.”
This is Coach Jim Keller’s eval
uation of his 1970 Fish squad, one
week away from Wednesday’s
season opener in Fort Worth.
“We expect TCU to have one
of their biggest freshmen teams
ever,” Keller said. “They had a
good recruiting year.”
There is a lack of depth on the
squad, with 31 of the 50 players
being on scholarship. The biggest
depth problem is among the line
men. The team has more backs
than linemen, and a good number
of the reserve linemen are non
scholarship players.
“It looks like we’ll be throw
ing quite a bit,” Keller said. “We
have a good quarterback in Tim
Trimmier (San Antonio Lee) and
some excellent receivers in split
ends Bobby Hughes and Eric
Elkins. Our flankers, Bobby Mer-
ren and Grady Harris, also catch
the ball real well.”
Dwight LaBauve and Pat Her
ring are the running backs for
the Fish. Both are 6’1 and 180
pounds. Herring is from Beau
mont South Park, while LaBauve
played high school ball in La
fayette, La.
In the offensive line, Keller lists
tackles Keith Rice and Kevin
Smith, guards Mike Cady and
Richard Semands, and center
Darrell Taliaferro as his top play
ers.
Both tight ends are players
without scholarship. They are
Mike Bruden and Roger Gaskamp.
Defensively, Marhsall Jackson,
6’3 and 200, and Kevin Owen, 6’3
and 210, are the ends, with Rusty
Pool expected to paly a lot also.
The guards are Bill Williams and
Mike Stautzenberger. Williams is
6’0 and 190, and Stautzenberger
is 5Tl and 210.
Middle linebacker is Billy Wie-
bold and Jimmy Tinsley. Charles
Murphy and Steve Wood will
share time at right linebacker.
In the secondary, Keller will go
with Charlie Billingsley and
Chris Hentzen at the corners,
Bill Nutt or Terry Savage at
strong safety, and Mark Green at
free safety.
Nutt will handle the punting.
The place kicking will be shared
by Merren and non-scholarship
players Tom Shirk and Jeff Pol-
licuff.
The first game is against the
TCU Wogs in Fort Worth Oct. 7.
The Baylor Cubs in Waco Oct. 15
and the Texas Tech Picadors in
Lubbock Nov. 5 are the Fish
games away from home.
The two home games are
against the Rice Owlets Oct. 29
and the Texas Shorthorns Nov.
20. All the games begin at 7:30
p.m.
