THE BATTALION
From Associated Press.
Lord wins defense award
By The Associated Press
Oh, Mike Lord could have gone
to Louisiana State on a scholar
ship but that would have meant
the Baton Rouge youngster, rath
er small by Tiger standards,
would have had to sit out a year
as a redshirt.
Instead, Lord went to Texas
A&M and made LSU wish it had
tried harder for the toy destroyer.
Lord made 23 tackles, inter
cepted a pass and recovered a
fumble last Saturday night in
Texas A&M’s 20-18 victory over
LSU to earn junior Lord The
Associated Press’ defensive-play-
er-of-the-week laurels in the
SWC.
Edie Phillips, the Texas quar
terback who ran California cross-
legged in a 56-15 victory, just
edged out Lord’s teammate, Ag
gie quarterback Lex James, in
the balloting for offensive player
of the week. James threw a 79-
yard touchdown strike to Hugh
McElroy with 13 seconds remain
ing in the pulsating victory over
LSU.
Middle linebacker Lord, who
stands 6-feet and weighs 201-
pounds, wasn’t courted heavily by
LSU although he played at Broad
moor High School in Baton Rouge.
His parents now live in Fort
Worth.
“LSU has the stigmatism of
being a big ball club,” Lord said.
“I’m not very big. I was almost
assured of a red shirt season with
them. I didn’t want that. In a
great sense, I felt I would not
get to play very much for them.”
Lord said the last-second vic
tory was “The greatest feeling
I've ever had coming off a foot
ball field. I knew quite a few
of the boys we were playing
against. That made it especially
nice. I think we may have sur
prised them. We took the fight
to them.”
Of Lord’s tackles, 12 were un
assisted. His recovered fumble on
the LSU 11 set up the tying
touchdown.
And his interception on the
A&M 27 shutdown what appeared
to be a LSU touchdown drive in
the opening period.
Phillips, in his first game for
the departed legend, Mr. James
Street, ran for 129 yards in 9
carries and scored two touch
downs. He also made good on
9 of 19 third down situations.
For his first game as a starter,
Phillips said “I wasn’t really that
nervous . . . really . . . but my
parents were. They couldn’t even
sit together for making each
other nervous.”
O. Z. White, a big California
defensive lineman, said “Phillips
gets my respect. The big thing
was the mental thing. He had the
mental thing, man, and that’s
what counts.”
O. Z. has a point, particularly
on one 11-yard touchdown play
where Phillips appeared to have
eyes in the back of his head. He
turned up field and as he was
being smashed by two Cal tac-
klers he casually flipped back to
fullback Steve Worster who rum
bled across.
The play was totally unre
hearsed and didn’t even raise Tex
as coach Darrell Royal’s

Bowling team
begins season
in Lubbock
The Texas A&M bowling team
opens its 1970 season Saturday
when it travels to Texas Tech
for its opening round of the
Texas Intercollegiate Bowling
Congress season.
The Aggies will play nine
games at meets held at Rice, the
University of Texas at Austin,
Southwest Texas State, the Uni
versity of Houston and South
Texas Junior College this fall as
well as hosting their own meet
Oct. 17 at the Triangle Bowl.
Bowling for A&M Saturday
will be Howard Creek, Chuck
Litterer, Randy Vick, Larry Brill,
Don Rockwell and Ray Keefe. The
team is a part of the recreation
committee of the Memorial Stu
dent Center.
A spokesman for the team said
that representatives of the bowl
ing team are selected from the
top six averages at the close of
each week of play in the Aggie
All-Star bowling league at the
Triangle Bowl.
That league bowls every Thurs
day evening, he said.
For a student to represent
A&M in the bowling meets, how
ever, he must have at least a 2.0
grade point ratio and not be on
any scholastic probation. This
eliminates first freshmen because
they have no GPR.
brows.
“He seemed to have control,”
Royal said.
Said Phillips: “I tried it one
time in practice, but fumbled. I
guess I just had more confidence
in the game.”
Worster said of Phillips “He
runs crooked and that’s some
thing I can’t do. He’s just great.”
And Phillips, who understudied
Street to the national champion
ship last year, said his friends
in hometown Mesquite, Tex.,
“were wondering if I ever was
going to play.”
Other vote getters on offense
included McElroy and Matthews
Williams of Baylor who scored on
a 30-yard touchdown gallop in
the Bears’ 10-7 upset of Army.
The other defensive vote getter
was defensive back Bruce Bush-
ong of Texas Tech.

James wins award
Mike Lord
Lex James
Lex James, whose sterling
passing performance and last-
second touchdown bomb to Hugh
McElroy against LSU last week
helped the Texas Aggies to an
upset of the 12th ranked Tigers,
has been named by United Press
International as the Southwest
Conference back of the week and
also the quarterback on UPI’s
national backfield of the week.
James completed 20 of 42 pass
es for 314 yards against the
Tigers in leading the Aggies to
a 17-point fourth period rally
their 20-18 win.
“Lex showed a lot of poi
against LSU. We’re pleased ill
his progress,” said Coach Gti
Stallings of his young quartj
back’s performance.
“I didn’t think our
would mature this fast.”
Joining James on the nafa
backfield were Joe Ordunaofi
braska, Lydell Mitchell of Pi
State and Dennis Allan of Ntj
Dame.
