Main 822-6000 ...vv,-. • i- Du Pont employes learn industrial fire-fighting Sweat dripped off Jack Meth- ner’s face as he watched his men attack the blazing petro-chemical flames at A&M’s fire training field. “I don’t think we (Du Pont) could get better fire-fighting training anywhere,” Methner said as he wiped his face with the sleeve of his bunker coat. “We’re not here just to learn how to save some plant equip ment,” he emphasized, “but through proper training we can expect to save some injuries and maybe lives.” Forty supervisors were brought by Methner from the E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. Sabine River Works at Orange this week for a concentrated fire-fighting course. The men will be in charge of both production and mechanical groups within the new ADN Plant in the Sabine River Works. “I don’t think any company in the world could afford the type of training facilities found here at A&M,” Methner stressed. The Sabine River Works safety supervisor noted the purpose of this training program is to give the supervisors the fire-fighting knowledge to guide fire protec tion within the new computerized ADN Plant, ADN is an abbreviation for adiponitrite, one of the basic prod ucts of nylon salt. A&M’s Firemen Training School staff is serving as instruc tors. During the two-day program which began Tuesday the Du Pont employes will fight fires in mock-ups of a typical petro chemical plant, overhead pipe rack, truck terminal dock, holding pits and several types of butane and line fires. Du Pont photographer Randy Reed is filming the training for possible use by the company as a training aid. As Methner watched his crew control the extremely hot petro chemical process fire, one hose crew assigned to cool a process tower dropped the water stream enough to kick up the fire on the ground. Flames leaped at a ground hose crew. Methner pointed out that those are the kind of simple mistakes that can make a difference in a chemical plant fire. No one was injured, but a lesson had been learned. The carefully constructed fa cilities at A&M allow for mis takes as part of the training fa cilities. Methner predicted that by the time the men finished the train ing they would be able to make good judgements if fire ever threatens the ADN Plant facili ties or workers. Agnew charges FCC head ‘puddle-headed philosopher’ LOUISVILLE, Ky. UP) — Vice President Spiro T. Agnew assail ed Tuesday “the puddle-headed philosophy” of Federal Communi cations Commissioner Nicholas Johnson. Agnew launched the second swing of his campaign to aid Re publican congressional candidates with a speech in behalf of Rep. William O. Cowger of Louisville. He said he believed the political pendulum is swinging against the “political hamlets” who dominate the Senate. But most of Agnew’s text was devoted to an attack on Johnson, the FCC member who had chal lenged Agnew’s Las Vegas, Nev., speech on the impact of the “drug culture” on American popular music. Johnson, in a statement issued in Washington, implied that Ag new should be critical of ciga rette advertising on television but said it is obvious that he wouldn’t do that while raising funds in tobacco country. And he accused the vice president of preaching hypocrisy and repres sion. Intervention power urged by Nixon WASHINGTON (A>) — Presi dent Nixon urged Congress Tues day to authorize immediate fed eral intervention in cases of bombings or arson on virtually any college campus and recom mended the hiring of an addi tional 1,000 FBI agents to do the job. Nixon’s new move was an nounced at a White House brief ing by Republican congressional leaders after they had met for nearly three hours with the Pres ident, Atty. Gen. John N. Mitch ell and Director J. Edgar Hoover of the Federal Bureau of Investi gation. As described to newsmen, the legislation proposed to Congress would trigger instant federal in tervention when bombings, arson and terrorist acts affect a col lege or university receiving fed eral assistance. That includes virtually all institutions of high er learning. Nixon proposed that the FBI add 1,000 agents to deal with campus outbreaks of the sort in volved and to assist in programs aimed at thwarting aerial hi jacking. The FBI now has about 7,000 agents. House GOP Leader Gerald Ford of Michigan quoted Hoover as reporting that the organiza tion Students for a Democratic Society was directly involved in 247 arson cases and 462 personal injury incidents in the past aca demic year. He said these were in addition to about 300 other episodes of destruction of other facilities or property. Ford, predicting congressional enactment of the legislation, de clared, “I think it will have a beneficial effect.” He said instances of campus terrorism “have increased in number, tempo and seriousness” and thus prompted Nixon’s rec ommendation. Ford and Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott of Pennsyl vania told reporters that, under terms of the legislation, federal agents would move onto cam puses in bombing and arson cases even if they were requested to stay away by college adminis trators. The recommendation would be added to a pending bill aimed primarily at organized crime. Scott said the program Nixon envisions would cost nearly $23 million over the course of a full year. Johnson’s contention that in creasing drug use is related to unjust forces in American so ciety, Agnew charged, “is the sort of fatuous nonsense being perpetrated on the American pub lic by the superpermissive offi cials that have been allowed to take so much control of our gov ernment.” And, he linked that viewpoint with the “political Hamlets” — presumably Democrats — con trolling the Senate. At no point in his text did the vice president name the FCC of ficial, an appointee of former President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the commission’s most out spoken critic of the broadcasting industry. Pro- and anti-Agnew demon strators marched outside the ho tel where Agnew spoke, but most had left by the time the vice president departed. BROWN - ALLEN MOTOR CO.
