Five tied for lead; Ags upset by SFA Five teams are deadlocked in first place in the Texas Col legiate Soccer League after the 11-member loop opened its fourth season last weekend. The University of Texas at Austin, St. Mary’s, Trinity, Tex as at Arlington, Texas Tech and Stephen F. Austin all recorded victories in their season openers. Defending champion. Texas gave up two goals to Houston in the first 30 minutes, the result of a defensive mixup between the Longhorn goalie and center half back, but Texas came roaring back to take a 3 to 2 halftime lead and added five more goals for an 8 to 2 victory. Eduardo Kepfer led the way for the Longhorns with a three- goal performance, including two penalty kicks. The Longhorn’s superior depth became a major factor in the second half. Trinity and St. Mary’s in San Antonio were a little rough on League newcomer Midwestern. The Indians, whose coach Don Rathburn, has missed all pre season practice because of a bout with hepatitis, were blitzed twice, 10 to 0 by Trinity and 10 to 1 by St. Mary’s. The Rattlers’ Richard Cassa- nelli moved into the League-scor ing lead with four goals against Midwestern. Tom Pacey and Ro berto Ferruzzi had two goals each for Trinity. Midwestern’s lone goal was scored by Doug McCoy. The other new member of the League this year, Stephen F. Pro season starts tonight in LA LOS ANGELES <AP> — The brash St. Louis Cardinals un doubtedly given a morale boost by their conquest of the champion Kansas City Chiefs, and the Los Angeles Rams get down to serious business Friday night. They open the National Foot ball League regular season be fore an expected turnout of 60,000 in Memorial Coliseum. The Rams, unbeaten in their six preseason games, are favored to defeat the Cardinals but the Los Angeles coach, George Allen, said this week: “St. Louis has a good football team, apparently much better than last year.” By the same token Allen is hardly downgrading his team, which won 11 straight last year, only to lose the last four includ ing the heartbreaker to the Minnesota Vikings for the West ern Conference title. Los Angeles closed out the ex hibition string 17-14 over the San Twins move closer MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL UP) Jim Perry with relief help from Stan Williams, moved the Minne sota Twins a game closer to the American League West champion ship Thursday wtih his 23rd vic tory, 4-3, over the California Angels. The Twins increased their lead over Oakland to T'/z games and reduced their magic number to Francisco 49ers, a rather ho-hum affair, while Coach Charley Winner’s Cards were upsetting the Chiefs 34-24. The Ram coach commented on St. Louis’ maturing young quar terback, Jim Hart. “Hart has improved so much that it is almost unbelievable,” Allen said. “No one scores against Kansas City like the Cardinals did.” Hart has three excellent re ceivers. “In fact,” said Allen, “we haven’t faced a team yet this year wtih three receivers the equal of St. Louis.” He referred to tight end Jackie Smith and the two outside men, Dave Williams and John Gilliam. The Rams, with All-Pro Roman Gabriel at quarterback, have out standing receivers in Jack Snow, Billy Truax, Wendell Tucker, Bob Klein and others. In the only Saturday night game in the four-day weekend schedule Chicago visits the New York Giants. On a 10-game Sunday card, Kansas City is at Minnesota, Denver is at Buffalo, Houston at Pittsburgh, Baltimore at San Diego, Miami at Boston, Oak land at Cincinnati, Atlanta at New Orleans, Dallas at Phila delphia, Green Bay at Detroit and Washington at San Fran cisco. The New York Jets will be at Cleveland Monday night for the weekend finale. SPORTSWEAR FOR THE WELL DRESSED MALE LOUPOTS H.I.S. The Lumber jack victory ruined the Aggie’s debut on Astroturf. Meanwhile, Texas at Arlington Rebels signalled their resurgence with a 3 to 2 win over TCU in Fort Worth. Texas Tech and Rice in Lub bock had the most spirited con test of the week. Tied 1 to 1 at the half, the Red Raiders pulled out a 4 to 3 victory by outpoint ing the Owls in the second half. Saturday’s schedule should break up the logjam in the stand ings: Stephen F. Austin will he in Austin against Texas; The University of Texas at Arling ton challenges Texas Tech in Lubbock; Texas A&M will meet Houston in Houston; and TCU also will be in the Bayou City for a contest against Rice. Trinity will play a non-League game against Texas A&I in Kingsville. St. Mary’s and Mid western Universities have open dates this week. Black’s varsity debut was here When A&M’s Marc Black re turns to the scene of his varsity debut Saturday, look for the jun ior fullback to see a lot more action. The 6-3, 212-pounder, whose main duty was blocking last sea son, carried 7 times for 30 yards against LSU in Baton Rouge in 1969, a respectable 4.3 average. He also caught a pair of passes. That wasn’t bad for a sopho more in his first varsity contest, especially in such a hostile set ting as Tiger Stadium. But things are going to be different this year. “One of the things we didn’t do last year that we should have done was let Marc Black carry the football more,” Coach Gene Stallings says. Last Saturday night, in the 41-14 win over Wichita State, Marc still didn’t run much. He carried 8 times for 26 yards and a 3.2 average. But he blocked well and didn’t play a lot as Stallings practically emptied his bench. Black had a good spring train ing in which he combined foot ball with track, throwing the javelin. He finished second in that event in the SWC meet that the Aggies won. One of his biggest thrills to date was A&M’s 20-13 victory over Army at West Point last year. Black’s father is an Army colonel working in the state de partment. After making high school All- America at New Mexico Military Institute, Black missed his fresh man season at A&M with a knee injury that required surgery. Re covery was slow so he was held out of action his first varsity season. As a redshirt soph last year he ran only 71 times but gained 255 yards for a 3.6 aver age. His blocking was a big plus factor. Due to being held out, Black is one of the older players on a young 1970 Texas A&M squad. The youth doesn’t concern him. “I’m not worried about the soph omores. They have confidence and they have ability. It’s great to be on a team with them.” Black, even with his experience, is being pushed hard by junior Doug Neill and redshirt soph Doug Robbins. He just can’t af ford to let up a second, else he’ll be unseated from his starting role. His poise and experience are valuable factors to go with the enthusiasm of the young sopho mores. He’s hoping the Aggies spring a surprise this week when they tackle the Tigers of LSU in Baton Rouge.
