Page 8 College Station, Texas Wednesday, September 16, 1970 THE BATTAUO Raider, Frog named AP SWC players of week By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Ask Texas Tech defensive back Ken Perkins and he’ll tell you to save the surprises for Christmas. Here Perkins and his fellow Red Raiders defenders prepared all last week to work against Tulane’s split backfield and more passing. So what happens? The Gren Wave comes out running from the I formation. It was a surprise all right but Perkins, with a little help from his friends, picked it up quickly and tossed it back into Tulane’s face in a thrilling 21-14 come- from-behind victory. And it was Perkins who picked the Raiders up when they were the lowest, trailing 14-7 in the fourth quarter. He latched onto a Tulane pass and shot 46 yards down the sideline for the tying touchdown. For his feats, Perkins was voted the Associated Press Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week in his very first varsity start in Lubbock. Meanwhile, another newcomer to the starting lineup at Texas Christian, christened his first starting role by rushing 247 yards and scoring two touch downs in the Frogs’ 31-7 victory over UT-Arlington. For his contribution—the third best rushing performance in con ference history — junior running back Bobby Davis won the AP’s SWC Offensive Player of the Week honor. Just for good meas ure, he also was named the AP’s national player of the week. “When they lined up in the I formation, it really surprised us,” Perkins said. “But I think our down linemen did a great job of picking it up. Tulane hurt us a couple of times early then we picked it up and the only time they scored was when defensive back Joe Bullard ran that punt back.” Bullard ran a Tech punt back 45 yards to set up the only touchdown scored by the Tulane offense. Bullard scored the other on a 50-yard interception return. Perkins said he came up on the Tulane tight end to make the play when the pass came high and behind the intended receiver. “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” he said. The sobering — if not startling — reflection about Davis’ per formance is that he almost didn’t start! TCU head coach Fred Taylor has said often that he has three starting running backs and all will play equally. So it was the last minute before Taylor de cided on Davis. “The others are sophomores and Coach Taylor wanted a little experience in there,” Davis s “I had played some last year, “Coach Marvin Lasater me I’d be starting because didn’t figure I’d fumble at was the only TCU back to fi ble,” Davis said. “It turnedi okay though, they didn’t fi score out of it.” Despite Taylor’s three-staij back theory, Davis is a gooii to be a starter this week tl the Frogs hook up with M Coll< 111 rasp IIP ill ill PSi Mi 5 5 PP HMLDI M BoeWlE.
