Stanford advances to 4th

One of the great fortes of the Louisiana State University Tigers’
in their football history, which shows 62 winning teams in 77 years is
their tremendous depth which as former Aggie All-American Rolf
Krueger once said “Four or five players line up against you during a
game and the third and the fourth are just as big and just as good as the
first.”
Mike Lord, Aggie linebacker who played his high school football
in the home town of the Tigers, Baton Rouge, feels that the current
Aggie team has the size and depth to play with the Tigers that previous
teams didn’t.
“I think we finally have some size and depth to compete with
LSU and being able to play more people should keep that humidity
from bothering us as much.”

The 41-14 win over Wichita was the first opening game win for
A&M since it defeated Maryland 21-13 in 1957. It was the first home
opening win since the Ags plastered Villanova 19-0 on Kyle Field in
1956. That 1956 team had a 9-0-1 season and won the Southwest
Conference championship.

The 41 points scored by the Aggies were the most they’ve scored
in a game since they pounded Trinity 55-0 in 1961. It was the highest
scoring opener since 1950 when the Aggies trounced Nevada 48-18.

Pat McDermott’s five consecutive extra points against Wichita
State is one short of the A&M school record of six by Darrow Hooper
and John Ballentine.

McDermott also tied the school record for most field goals in a
game with his two against the Shockers. He holds the mark with Mike
Clarke, who’s now kicking for the Dallas Cowboys of the National
Football League, Charlie Riggs and Mike Bellar, who is now a junior on
the current Aggie squad.

Southwest conference statistics released after games of last week
shows the Aggies with only one leader in all the offensive categories.
Safety Dave Elmendorf, who ran 34 yards with the first punt returned
by the Aggies this season has a 34 yard average for a slight lead over
Terry Jackson of Baylor who ran one back for 31 yards.
Other top Aggies in the stats after the first week were rushing
yardage, Steve Burks, 96 yards for third; Brad Dusek, 83 yards for
fourth. Passing, James fourth and Joe Mac King seventh. Pass receiving,
Hugh McElroy, 3-67 yards fourth. Scoring, Pat McDermott 11 points,
second. Total offense, James, 166 yards for third and King 67 yards for
fifth. Interceptions, Lee Hitt and Mike Bunger, for tie for second.
Kickoff returns, Elmendorf, 32.0 yard average for second. Tandem
offense, Dusek 105 yards for second and McElroy 92 yards for fourth.

Quarterback Lex James, who completed seven of 12 passes for
167 yards and was not intercepted against Wichita State, is anxious to
tackle the big three that lies ahead of the Aggies.
“I’m really looking forward to playing LSU, Ohio State and
Michigan.” “Those are the teams I read about when I was younger, and
I always hoped I’d get a chance to play against them. I consider it an
honor.”
The LSU game will be one of three games the Aggies will play on
natural grass this season. The others are Ohio State and Baylor.
Michigan plays on Tartan Turf and SMU, Texas and the Aggies
have AstroTurf.
Arkansas’ Razorbacks, rated No.
4 in preseason rankings, were
bumped to No. 11. Stanford, pre
viously ranked 10th, took over
the fourth spot and Missouri
moved up one notch to No. 10 in
the poll of football writers and
broadcasters.

weekend while Southern Cal de
feated Alabama 42-21.
Twenty-four of the 40 voters
picked Ohio State No. 1, giving
the Buckeyes 728 points. Texas
had six first-place votes for 657
points while the Trojans accu
mulated only 644 points, includ
ing seven No. 1 votes.
Mississippi, ranked No. 5; Penn
State, No. 7 and Michigan, No. 8,
each received one first- place vote.
Others in the Top Ten are No
