Ella may hit Texas coast
Editor:
We would like to question the
reasons—if there are any—behind
the decision of the Athletic De
partment to request that the fans
stay off of the Astroturf after
the football games. In many
places that have the same surface
on their football fields, the sur
face is used not only by colleges
but by many high school teams
every week.
If all of this practicing and
games does not wear out the sur
face, it would not seem that the
feet of of the few thousand people
that would be walking on the
t 1.1 A„
field five times a year would do
considerable (if indeed it did any)
damage to the football field.
Indeed, if the Athletic Depart
ment has not complained all the
years that Kyle Field has had
natural grass, it seems incredible
that they could raise a fuss now.
This attitude strangely resembles
that of a little child with a new
toy-—nobody except that child can
play with it until its novelty has
worn off.
We think that the little extra
wear that might result the first
year would be worth it to let
everybody find out what the field
and track are like. We do not
actually anticipate a change of
policy, but it would be nice to
know why we are staying off the
“grass.”

Small craft warnings went up
late Thursday along the Texas
coast as Hurricane Ella churned
in the Gulf of Mexico about 500
miles south of New Orleans.
Weather observers also warned
small craft along the Louisiana
coast not to venture into the
open Gulf.
“It will affect some portion of
the Texas or Louisiana coast
within the next 48 hours,” said
Dr. Robert Simpson, director of
the National Hurricane Center
in Miami.
Ella, the season’s fifth hurri
cane, formed off Mexico’s Yuca
tan Peninsula a little more than
a month after Hurricane Celia
smashed into Texas at Corpus
Christi.
Hurricane Celia killed 13 per
sons and inflicted nearly $500
million in damages when it
struck Aug. 3.
The Weather Bureau said Hur
ricane Ella was moving toward
the northwest at 12 m.p.h. late
Thursday.
Red Cross chapters from
Brownsville to the Florida Keys
were placed on alert.
“It’s much too early to say
exactly where Ell will strike,”
Simpson said. “At present it’s
headed toward the central Texas
coast but is expected to take a
slight bend to the right.”
WEDNESDAY
IEEE will meet at 7:30 p.m.
in Bolton Hall room 301.
DeWitt-Lavaca County Home
town Club will meet at 7:30 p.m.
in Academic Building room 203
to organize and plan for the
Thanksgiving party.
Aggie Wives Bridge Club will
meet at 7:30 p.m. in the MSC
Assembly Room. Beginners class
will begin at the first meeting,
other groups play for fun and
prizes. An invitation is extended
to wives of students in all de
partments, faculty wives, female
students and women employes of
TAMU. For further information,
call 822-2655.
THURSDAY
Austin Hometown Club will
meet at 7:30 p.m. in MSC room
3D.
