Five Middle East hijackings

The number of Middle East
hijack attacks this week grew to
five Wednesday when Arab com
mandos seized a British Overseas
Airways Corp. plane near the
Persian Gulf.
The BOAC VC10 joined two
other captive planes on a guer
rilla-held Jordan desert airstrip
and its 113 passengers and crew
men raised the number of host
ages to more than 300.
The pro-Marxist Popular Front
for the Liberation of Palestine,
which assumed responsibility for
the rash of hijackings, had threat
ened to blow up the first two
planes, a Swissair DCS and a
Trans World Airlines Boeing 707.
The deadline was late Wednesday
night, but Swiss officials express
ed belief this would be extended.
The latest PFLP seizure fueled
tension at airports around the
world. It also appeared to widen
the breach between the pro-Pek
ing group and major Arab capi
tals.
At the behest of Britain and
the United States, the U.N. Se
curity Council convened in New
York to consider the crisis posed
by the hijackings.
In Washington, the White
House announced that six large
Air Force transports were being
dispatched to Turkey with medi
cal evacuation teams in case they
should be needed in Jordan.
A spokesman declined to say
if any U.S. military units or
equipment would be moved nearer
over 300
the guerrilla base where the host
ages and planes were held.
The British jetliner was seized
just after its take off from Bah
rain on the Persian Gulf during
a flight from Bombay to Lon
don.
A BOAC spokesman said 30
women and 21 children, en route
to schools in England, were among
the 103 passengers. At least three
Americans and members of Bah
rain’s royal family were also said
to be aboard the plane which car
ried 10 crew members.
In Beirut, where the BOAC re
fueled before continuing to the
guerrilla-held airstrip in north
ern Jordan, a PFLP spokesman
said the plane was hijacked to
reinforce a demand that Britain
free Leila Khaled, 25, being held
in London for Sunday’s abortive
attempt to seize an Israeli El A1
airliner.
The guerrillas also were de
manding the release of three
Arab commandos in West Ger
many and three others in Switz
erland, all jailed for involvement
in other hijacking incidents.
All three governments were re
ported willing to comply with the
demand, but only on the condition
that all hostages — including a
number of Israel citizens—were
released.
There were signs that Arab
governments, despite support for
Palestinian efforts to recover
former homes in what is now
Israel, were getting fed up with

Wednesday in the Memorial Stu
dent Center Social Room. Tuition
is $14 and includes a study man

Rucker said.

of a national continuing education
program by the National Council
of State Garden Clubs, Inc., of

A&M’s school, “Landscape De
sign Course 2,” is one of 18 con
ducted this year in the United
States, Rucker explained. Last
year 50 men and women complet
ed the Course 1 study at A&M.
Rucker, national chairman of
the landscape design study
course, is one of two men on the
150-member national board. He is
coordinating the school and will
be one of five instructors.
Other instructors are Dr. Clare
A. Gunn, Wendell G. Horsley,
Everett E. Janne and Robert F.
White.
Dr. Gunn is a licensed land
scape architect and Ph.D. gradu
ate of the University of Michigan.
His experience ranges from illus
tration engineer and research as
sociate in tourist and resort build
ings to extension specialist in
tourism recreation development
and land and water conservation.
He is professor of tourism
recreation development at Texas
A&M.
