Defense strength of young ’Shockers By MIKE STEPHENS Battalion Sports Writer The Shockers of Wichita State University will be opening their season Saturday night with the Aggies at 7:30 p.m. on Kyle Field with the confident promises of head coach Ben Wilson pushing them. Attempting to improve their 2-8 record of la^t year, Wilson will be fielding a youthful but op timistic team. “We have plenty of room to improve and we’re going to do it,” Wilson says. Wilson and his staff have been pleased with workouts so far, although there is a need for im provement, they believe. “We will have to improve and continue to work hard if we in tend to beat Texas A&M,” he says. But Wilson says that we’re “still 50 percent improved over a year ago at this time.” Wilson believes the defense is the strong point of the team. Led by the experienced linebackers, the defense will probably allow even fewer points this year. Potential All-American John Hoheisel, 6-4, 215-pounds, will be the team captain of the “Gold Fever Gang.” He is the middle linebacker, with 5-10, 200-pound Steve Moore and 5-11, 197-pound Historic opener for Kyle field An historic occasion is on tap for storied Kyle Field Saturday night when the Aggies open 1970 football play against Wichita State at 7:30 p.m. It will be the first game ever played on artificial turf at Kyle Field. Too, it will be the first collegiate football meeting ever between the Aggies and Wichita State. It isn’t a sellout. Tickets will be available on game day. Kyle Field seats 48,000 and it now is one of the most beautiful foot ball plants in the nation. The AstroTurf football field is sur rounded by a new tartan track, making the stadium a very col orful football setting. The famed Texas Aggie band will be on hand to add more color and entertainment. Also, 17 local and area bands will be guests of Texas A&M. They won’t march or play but will be in uniform. The list includes S.F. Austin High of Bryan, A&M Consoli dated of College Station, Allen Academy of Bryan, Jones Junior High of Bryan, Burton High, Caldwell High, El Campo High, LaGrange High, Lexington High, Liberty High, Madisonville High, Marlin High, Rogers High, Smithville High, Spring High, Tomball High and Willis High. Glenn Kostal controlling the sides. Leading the offense will be the speedy Randy Jackson as fullback and returning quarterback Bob Renner. Jackson averaged six yards a carry last season. The 6-0, 205- pounder sprinted for three touch downs and 240 yards in the spring game for the Shockers. Renner totaled 768 yards in of fense as a sophomore last year. He also averaged 40 yards a punt last season. Others to watch will be Gene Robinson, a 9.5 sprinter, at split end. Also, Kim Cocklin at center and Marvin Brown, tailback, both sophomores. With 22 returning lettermen, in cluding 10 starters, Wilson does have reasons for hoping for an improved year. With the newly invented “poly-turf” on their home field and the winning atti tude of the players instilled by Wilson, Wichita State could be the most improved team in the Mis souri Valley Conference this sea son. The Shockers are about to dis play their improvement against the Aggies on Kyle Field Satur day night. Stallings displeased with Aggie work Coach Gene Stallings was high ly displeased with the way his Texas Aggies worked in Tues day’s practice. “I know we didn’t get any bet ter. We didn’t improve one ounce today and that’s all I’m going to say about it.” Stallings probably was think ing ahead* to Saturday night’s opening battle with Wichita State at Kyle Field. The Shockers pre sent a big, veteran defensive unit, one that averages 218 among the front four and 212 among the three linebackers. The Aggies drilled on various phases of play Tuesday in hot humid weather. “Oh, it was hot,” Stallings said, “but it wasn’t that hot.” A crowd of around 35,000 is an ticipated for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff in the storied old A&M stadium that has a brand new look now with an AstroTurf foot ball field surrounded by a tartan track. New injury rule proposed by TMA AUSTIN ) _ A rule to give injured football players more protection has been proposed by a committee of the Texas medi cal Association. It would require any player who “receives an injury to the head, neck, trunk, or lower ex tremities” to be carried off the field on a litter. PRICES GOODTHUR. - FRI. - SAT.
