THE BATTALION
SWC teams schedule new foes
Road maps may be as much in
demand as game programs dur
ing the Southwest Conference’s
1 9 7 0 non-conference football
schedule.
Of the 30 non-conference games
set by the eight SWC schools,
an even dozen match teams that
have never played each other
before. It's probably the most
sweeping conglomerate schedule
revision in SWC history.
SMU is the leader with three
new faces on its attractive sched
ule and the fourth Mustang op
ponent hasn’t appeared on the
Dallas school’s regular season
schedule since 1939.
The only Southwest Conference
team not taking on a new oppon
ent is Rice.
First time matchups by schools
are SMU vs Tennessee Sept. 19,
New Mexico State Sept. 26 and
Northwestern Oct. 3; Arkansas
vs Stanford Sept. 12; Baylor vs
Missouri Sept. 11 and Army Sept.
19; Texas vs UCLA Oct. 3; A&M
vs Wichita State Sept. 12 and
Michigan Oct. 3; TCU vs UT-
Arlington Sept. 12 and Wisconsin
Sept. 26; and Texas Tech vs.
California Santa Barbara Oct. 3.
The new look schedules are
partly the result of the extension
of the college season to a maxi
mum of 11 games this year and
partly the result of a trend to
ward scheduling the most attrac
tive opposition possible rather
than “loading up” on weaker
area teams.
In recent seasons, such nation
ally respected teams as Purdue,
Oklahoma and Southern Califor
nia began appearing on some
SWC team’s non-conference
schedules for the first time. In
the 1960’s the SWC managed only
a 131-125-11 advantage over
stronger intersectional foes. This
percentage of 51.1 compares to
a mark of 68.8 record during the
1950’s.
Aggies test
wet AstroTurf
Dave Elm end orf
The Texas Aggies tested their
new AstroTurf covering of Kyle
Field under rainy wet conditions
Tuesday and came away singing
its praises.
“It was a little slick,” defensive
safety Dave Elmendorf declared.
“But it wasn’t bad at all.” “It
was 100 percent better than wet
grass.”
A heavy rain Monday night
followed by intermittent showers
Tuesday left the field wet. There
was virtually a steady sprinl*
throughout practice.
The Aggies worked , on U,
timing of their offensive attai
against Wichita State defen®,
alignments.
They also emphasized pass pi*
tection, blocking and the kicldiij
game.
One of the afternoon’s higt
lights was the place kicking j
soccer style kicker Pat McD#
mott.
