A form of quality control for
educational administrators was
suggested Friday at Texas A&M
University by a former university
official.
Dr. Bill Carden said faculty
evaluation of administrators
would serve the quality control
function, of which there is a
void in higher education.
The former Baylor University
assistant vice^ president pointed
out that the faculty is evaluated
by students and administration,
but there are no professional
guidelines for administrators.
Carden told participants of an
Academic Administration Semi
nar that the evaluation tech
nique has been employed, describ
ed its use at Baylor and indicated
that it furnished several positive
results.
“Faculties have long been
known as the greatest kibitzers
of the administration,” reminded
the executive vice president of
Waco’s Word Inc., publisher and
distributor of religious materials
and recordings. That element and
fracturing between the two “sub
cultures” of an institution caus
ed by academic professionalism

Four unrestricted Mobil Oil
Corporation grants totaling $2,500
have been awarded the engineer
ing departments.
Louis Castelli presented the
awards Wednesday to Engineer
ing Dean Fred J. Benson for the
chemical, civil, mechanical and
petroleum engineering depart
ments.
“Mobil feels real privileged to
be able to participate in this way
in your programs,” commented
Castelli, general manager of
Mobil’s Corpus Christi explora
tion and production division.
He noted that Mobil made the
four awards unrestricted in na
ture to provide departments flexi
bility for activities that cannot
be planned in advance.
The Petroleum Engineering De
partment received $1,000 and $500
each were presented to the Chem
ical, Civil and Mechanical Engi
neering Department.

sey E. McCrory pointed out that
Mobil supports A&M in other
areas, tthrough Geology Depart
ment awards and equipment used
in geophysics.
Recipients of two of the four
scholarships awarded to the
Chemical Engineering Depart
ment are soph Donald P. Fip-
pinger of Houston and freshman
Malcolm D. Palmer of Mount
Pleasant. Dr. C. D. Holland,
chemical engineering head, said
the junior and senior award re
cipients will be named Sept. 1.
Grants, covering tuition, books
and fees, will be renewable on a
yearly basis through the four
years of undergraduate study or
until the recipient receives the
bachelor degree.
Rainfall dribbled during June
to its lowest relative output of
the last 11 months in Bryan and
College Station.
The area averaged 2.17 inches,
the lowest below average reading
since last July. Normal here for
June and July is 3.9 and 2.9
inches, respectively.
Data from a meterology re
search project indicates the area
between Villa Maria Road and
North Coulter Drive west to
Country Club and Finfeather
Lakes got the most out of two
days of measurable rain during
June.
The top reading of 29 stations
reporting in the project was 3.05
inches in the vicinity of the 1700
block of Texas Avenue. A point
just south of the Municipal Golf
Course reported 1.49 inches and
stations south and southeast of
the campus varied around two
inches.
A Kurten weather observer
gauged 1.12 inches and 1.02 was
recorded at Steep Hollow. The
Federal Aviation Administration
reading for June was .84 inch.
Most of the twin-city area’s
rainfall came during a June 24
shower, which ranged from 1.5 to
2.5 inches.
