^ A&M to award posthumous I DVM degree at exercises A&M will award its first post humous doctor of veterinary medicine degree to a Houston native during graduation exer cises Friday, Aug. 7. College of Veterinary Medi cine Dean A. A. Price said the wife and parents of Danny Lee Davis will accept the degree. Davis died May 10 from Hodg kins disease. He was 25. The Waltrip High School graduate was a third-year vet erinary medicine student. He at tended classes in a wheelchair for six weeks prior to his death, maintaining a B academic aver age and attending all classes and clinics. A spokesman reported Davis was in high spirits throughout his illness and was in class the Friday before his death. Davis is survived by his wife, the former Jan Young of 2307 Hauerhill, Houston, and his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. Davis of Route 3, Hempstead. He attended South Texas Jun ior College and Tarleton State before transferring here in Sep tember, 1964. He was admitted to the professional veterinary medicine program in September, 1967. Davis was named a Distin guished Student two trimesters, an honor for students with a 3.25 grade point ratio or better. Mackin, biology professor, has been awarded pro fessor emeritus status by the in stitution’^ board of directors. The designation is effective Sept. 1, when Dr. Mackin retires from regular service after 21 years with the university. Dr. Mackin was recommended for the honor by Dean of Science J. M. Prescott. “International recognition for research has been accorded Dr. Mackin, who is one of the most productive scientists in his spe ciality,” Dr. Prescott noted. Lance VanZandt, defensive co ordinator at West Texas State in Canyon, has replaced Dick Har ris as defensive secondary coach. Athletic Director and head foot ball coach Gene Stallings an nounced the change. Harris joined the staff in March and worked with the Aggies dur ing spring drills. In making the change, Stallings said, “Things just didn’t work out satisfactorily with Harris.” Stallings added that “Texas A&M is fortunate to secure such a well qualified coach as Van Zandt at this late date.” VanZandt said, “This is a tre mendous challenge. I’m looking forward to working for Coach Stallings and coaching Texas A&M’s defensive backs.” The 31-year-old VanZandt worked at West Texas State the past two years. The Buffaloes set a school record with 26 intercep tions last season and had 23 in terceptions the year before. Prior to that VanZandt coached the defensive secondary two sea sons at New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M. In 1967, New Mexico Highlands had 23 inter ceptions and the defense set six school records.
