Perkins named
to faculty post
Appointment of Dr. Raymond
P. Perkins to the Industrial Edu
cation Department faculty has
been announced by Dr. James L.
Boone, head.
Dr. Perkins will chair the de
partment’s graduate program in
vocational industrial education.
His appointment is effective next
fall.
With the addition of Perkins
and William H. Lowry, doctoral
candidate in educational admin
istration of Coolidge, the depart
ment has six faculty members
and a part-time art instructor.
Enrollment in the College of
Education department is 120,
equally divided among graduate
and undergraduate students.
Boone and Perkins will be an
associate professor and gradu
ate faculty member. He will
come from the University of
Florida, where he has been a
faculty member four years.
The Pampa native studied en
gineering here in the early 1940s
and completed the bachelor and
master’s degrees at West Texas
State after three years service in
the Pacific with the Marine
Corps.
Perkins, 47, received the voca
tional teaching certificate here
in 1952. He studied automotive
mechanics and technical instruc
tion in the Marine Corps and Air
Force and was awarded the Ph.D.
from the University of Texas in
1966.
His wide experience includes
work as a gasoline refinery lab
technician, oil field equipment
repair, jet aircraft electrical sys
tems instructor and teacher in
Gruver and Amarillo schools.
Perkins, who is married and
has three daughters, has been a
consultant on junior college vo
cational programs throughout
the Southeast U. S. and partici
pated in numerous conferences
and institutes and published in
various journals.
Rudder Angus
sale Monday
in San Angelo
A 27-year-old registered Angus
cow that produced 23 calves has
been given to the university by
Mrs. Earl Rudder, widow of the
late Texas A&M president.
The cow, whose registered name
is Pride EB Girl, will be 28
July 3.
Dr. O. D. Butler, head of the
Animal Science Department, said
Pride EB Girl is the oldest cow
presently on file in the records
of the American Angus Associ
ation.
He said the animal will be used
for research in the Animal Sci
ence Department. The longevity
and the calving record indicate
unusual functional efficiency.
The cow was born on the Ross
E. Hanna Ranch at Little York,
111., and sold to the Essar Ranch
near San Antonio in 1959. She
went to the Rudder ranch near
Brady in 1961 along with 30 per
formance-tested females.
Butler said the Rudder Angus
herd of 433 registered and com
mercial cattle will be auctioned
at a dispersal sale Monday in
San Angelo.
Grant to aid assistant proj
answer pollution questions
A $40,000 National Science
Foundation grant to Dr. Timothy
Rose should help answer some
of the questions about air pol
lution and smog.
The assistant professor’s two-
year grant is entitled “Charac
terization of Primary Products
from Photodissociation of Poly
atomic Molecules.”
“Photodissociation is the proc
ess in which a molecule absorbs
light of sufficient energy to
break one or more of the bonds
holding it together,” Dr. Rose
explained.
“The breaking of chemical
bonds is the initial step in al
most all chemical reactions.
Knowledge of the energy neces
sary to break a bond and the
distribution of any excess ener
gy after the bond is broken is
essential to a complete under
standing of the reactions of the
fragments which follow,” the
chemistry professor said.
Molecules of hydrogen sulfide,
nitrogen dioxide and sulfur di
oxide—important contributors to
pollution of the atmosphere —
undergo photodissociation reac
tions initiated by sunlight.
Dr. Rose pointed out the re
