Entertainer now secretary

Touring the country with a well
known piano group during the
depression, owning a dancing
school in Hollywood, California,
owning a business college in
Brownwood, and being secretary
to the late James Earl Rudder
have been the highlights in the
life of Ora May Warren, now
secretary to Vice President for
Business Affairs Tom Cherry.
Mrs. Warren said she gradu
ated from high school when she
was 15 years old and was offered
a scholarship to Rice Institute,
but she turned it down.
“After I graduated from high
school my parents moved from
Oklahoma to Houston where my
sister and I formed a dancing
duet,” she said. “We performed
as ‘The Hill Sisters’ in Houston
and then all over the state. We
quit the act so I could go to
California and so she could marry
an Aggie.
“I started the Hollywood
School of Dance and then I joined
a group called the ‘Ivories’ which
was a piano and musical comedy
act, consisting of one grand piano
and ten small ones.
“We went on three tours of the
United States and at that time
we were one of the highest rated
shows on the road.”
After she sold the dance school,
Mrs. Warren came to Brownwood
in 1937 and bought Mac’s Busi
ness College which consisted of
a run-down building with four
old typewriters.
“The school was a success and
my students told me they were
motivated to do well by the fact
that I could type over 100 words
per minute,” she said.
“When I sold the business col
lege it had 40 typewriters and
all modern equipment. I don’t
know if the school still exists,
because it might have been joined
with the college they have in
Brownwood.”
After selling the business col
lege, Mrs. Warren went first to
Austin to work as secretary to
the president of the Visual Edu
cation, Inc. and then to the state
General Land Office as secretary
to the chief attorney.
In 1955 she went to work for
Earl Rudder when he was State
Land Commissioner and worked
for him until he came to Texas
A&M.
“My husband was deputy sher
iff of Travis County so I stayed
and worked for President Rud
der’s successor,” Mrs. Warren
said. “After my husband died I
came to Texas A&M as President
Rudder's secretary and stayed
until Mr. Cherry came to work
here.”
Cherry took over as head of
five departments and according
to Mrs. Warren, “it was a monu
mental job to handle at first.”
Mrs. Warren concluded by say
ing the outstanding aspect of her
life has been the bosses she has
had. “President Rudder and Mr.
Cherry have both been the best
bosses any secretary could ask
for,” she said.
Brown new president
of local PDK
Dr. Herman Brown of the Agri
cultural Education Department,
has been installed as president of
the College Station Chapter of
Phi Delta Kappa.
Brown is an associate professor
and assistant to the dean in the
College of Agriculture.
Phi Delta Kappa is an interna
tional professional fraternity for
men in education. Membership is
composed of recognized leaders in
the profession.
Former newsman
freelance writer
joins! department
A former Associated Press
newsman and freelance science
writer will join the Journalism
Department Sept. 1, announced
Department Head C. J. Leabo.
William C. Harrison, 51, is a
nationally recognized science
writer, Leabo pointed out.
Harrison will fill an assistant
professor position vacated by Bob
Rogers, who is joining the jour
nalism faculty at the University
of Wyoming.
A 1948 Phi Beta Kappa gradu
ate of the University of Missouri,
Harrison holds Bachelor of Arts
and Bachelor of Journalism de
grees. He also was awarded the
Certificate in Advanced Science
Writing from Columbia Univer
sity in 1966.
Harrison was a bomber pilot
in Europe during World War II,
serving from 1942 until 1945.
He was managing editor of twin
weekly newspapers in Hampton,
Iowa, from 1951 until 1953. Har
rison joined The Associated Press
in April, 1954, and resigned in
1968 to spend full-time working
on books, promotion and freelance
writing.
