Englert bat champ;
Rau leads 4 departments
All-Southwest Conference se
lections R. J. Englert and Doug
Rau of the Texas A&M baseball
team have topped six categories
in the final statistics released by
the SWC with Englert taking the
full season batting title with a
,400 average.
Rau, the junior southpaw from
Columbus, recorded the most wins
by any Southwest Conference
pitcher, six; the most strikeouts,
64; the most innings pitched, 47,
and tied for the lead in games
pitched category with seven.
Englert, a sophomore from Big
Spring, was second in the batting
race in conference games only
with a .327 mark but rapped non
league hurlers for a .500 clip to
finish with the highest season
mark. David Hall, Texas right-
fielder, won the SWC batting title
with a .364 mark.
Englert also tied with team
mate Dave Elmendorf for the
conference stolen bases lead with
eight.
Rau also placed fifth in earned
run average with a 1.34 but his
season mark was 0.86 and his
record against non-conference
foes was 0.00 as he did not allow
an earned run in 26 innings.
Dave Benesh, senior righthand
er for the Aggies, tied with Rau
and Rick Dusek of Baylor and
Lynn Humphries of SMU for the
games pitched lead.
Both Rau and Benesh placed
high in the strikeout percentage
and control artist departments
with Rau winning the strikeout
title averaging 12.26 per nine
innings while Benesh was fourth
averaging 6.60. In the control
artist department Rau walked an
average of only 2.3 men every
nine innings for third place and
Benesh was fourth with a 2.91.
Burt Hooton of the University of
Texas at Austin won that cate
gory with a 1.76 walks allowed
per nine innings on the mound.
On a basis of won-lost percent
age and e.r.a. combination Rau
was the second leading pitcher
behind Hooton who had a 5-0
record with 1.10 e.r.a. and Benesh
finished eighth with a record of
4-2 and a 2.53 e.r.a.
A&M sophomore Bruce Katt
ranked tenth with a 2-1 record
and 2.70 e.r.a. Katt entered the
SWC record books this season
when he struck out 19 men in
one game.
Scott Wise of Rice won the
conference e.r.a. crown with a
0.80 standard.
Boyd Hadaway, senior right-
fielder tied for the home run lead
in the conference with John Lan-
gerhans of Texas as each hit four
homers. He also was second in
runs batted in with 16. Dennis
Alexander of Rice knocked in 19
runs for the top spot.
Billy Hodge All-SWC catcher
for A&M placed 13th in batting
with a .298 and was the best
fielding catcher with a .988 mark.
Hodge who hit a .340 for the
season batted .391 against non
conference competition.
Hadaway was 15th with a .291
mark and Chris Sans 17th with a
.279 average.
Sans and Hadaway were two
of six players who played error
less ball in the conference. Sans
was flawless in 120 chances and
Hadaway on 17 attempts.
The Aggies were second in team
batting with a .243 to Texas
which had a .297 and also were
second in team pitching as they
allowed an average of .205 to
hitters against them. The league
champion Longhorns led allowing
only a .182 average.
A&M committed only 22 errors
for a .963 percentage while the
Longhorns committed 13 for a
.975 mark.

El Paso tennis star Courson
first Aggie tennis signee

doubles champion during his
junior year and a semifinalist as
a sophomore from El Paso, has
become the first player to sign
a letter of intent with the Texas
A&M tennis team, according to
coach Omar Smith.
Courson has won several out-

standing tourneys and is one of
the best all-around players in
the state, Smith said.
Courson’s coach Dalton Hill has
produced many outstanding ten
nis players and his son is cur
rently a leading NCAA tennis
player from the University of
New Mexico, Smith added.
Another prospect, who Smith
considers among the top 10 in
the state, George Moncado of
Corpus Christi, is visiting A&M
this week.
Two members of the A&M ten
nis team will be going to Europe
this summer to play against the
European circuit, Smith said, not
ing that Freshman Lawton Park
and Jon Ragland who missed this
season with an injury will be go
ing to Europe to play the top
amateur players in several coun
tries.
