A&M acquires second
research ship
A&M has acquired a second
oceanographic research ship for
expanded operations in the Gulf
of Mexico.
Dr. Richard A. Geyer, head of
the Oceanography Department,
said the 100-foot steel-hulled ves
sel was formerly owned by
Scripps Institution of Oceano
graphy.
The twin-engine craft, named
“ORCA,” is currently undergoing
modifications. The Moody Foun
dation of Galveston awarded the
university an $88,000 grant for
purchase and installation
of oceanographic instrumentation
and laboratory facilities.
Dr. Geyer said ORCA will be
primarily used for research along
the continental shelf of the Gulf
Coast, beginning this summer.
Such operation, he explained,
will free the university’s present
oceanographic research vessel, the
180-foot R/V Alaminos, for deep
water projects and long-duration
cruises.
ORCA is A&M’s fourth vessel.
In addition to the Alaminos, the
university operates the “Texas
Clipper,” a 15,000-ton converted
oceanliner used as a training ship
for its Texas Maritime Academy,
and a 55-foot Chris Craft Constel
lation which has been transform
ed into a water-quality research
vessel operating on the Houston
Ship Channel and Galveston Bay.
A&M is the only institution in
the state with deep sea-going ca
pabilities.
