Ags Split But Horns Win SWC

AUSTIN — The Texas Aggies
solved James Street Thursday
but they could not figure out
Texas’ All-American Burt Hooten
as they split a Southwest Confer
ence doubleheader with the Long
horns that gave Texas the 1970
title.
The Aggies knocked out Street
in the sixth inning of the opener
for a 7-5 win but Hooten tossed
the Horns to an 8-0 win in the
second game.

who needed to sweep the series.
The opener matched the Ag
gies’ Doug Rau against Street,
two pitchers who sported the most
gaudy records in the conference.
Both had problems as their con
trol faltered for one of the few
times this year.
Rau, who won his ninth game
of the year against a single loss,
walked five men in the five in
nings that he worked. Before the
game, he had issued only 15 walks
in 68 innings.
Street walked four in five and
one-third innings after only 15
walks in 52 innings.
Butch Ghutzman was the Ag
gies’ offensive star in the opener
as he batted four times and
reached base on two singles, a
walk and a fielder’s choice. He
scored each time.
His leadoff single helped get
A&M on the scoreboard first.
R. J. Englert sacrificed him to
second and Billy Hodge’s single
drove in the run.
Texas took the lead in the sec
ond inning as Tommy Harmon
singled to right and Rau walked
David Hall and Jack Miller to
load the bases with none out.
John Langerhans and Pat Amos
knocked in runs with successive
singles as Texas moved in front,
2-1.
A&M came back in the top of
the third as Rau and Ghutzman
walked and Englert sacrificed for
the second time. Dave Elmen
dorf’s double to left scored both
runners as A&M regained the
lead, 3-2.
Another leadoff walk to Rau
led to A&M’s fourth run. Ghutz

spurt in the sixth for A&M. Lar
ry Hardy relieved Street after
Sampson’s hit with one out.
Ronnie LaGrone, pinch-running
for Sampson, beat Amos’ throw
to second when he hestitated
whether to throw to second or
first. Ragland, who was on sec
ond, kept running and scored on
the play.
Elmendorf’s single scored La
Grone, who would have been out
had he not knocked the ball loose
from Harmon in a collision at
home. Hardy then issued consecu
tive walks to Hodge and Hada
way to force in another run.
Charles Kelly relieved Rau in
the sixth and shut out the Long
horns the last two innings to
gain his fourth save of the year.
But the second game was too
much Texas muscle and Burt
Hooten as the Longhorns won,
8-0, banging out 11 hits off four
Aggie pitchers.
Texas scored twice in the first
as Bagwell doubled in Mike
Markl, who had singled. Har
mon’s single knocked in the sec
ond run.
Langerhans’ eighth home run
of the year gave the Longhorns
two more runs in the fourth and
then they wrapped it up with
four runs in the fifth.
Harmon’s triple with the bases
loaded was the big blow in that
inning and Miller’s single scored
Harmon with the final run.
Harmon, a junior catcher from
Fort Worth, slammed five hits to
pace the Longhorns. He knocked
in seven runs with a homer and
a triple being the big blows.
Hooten allowed only two hits
and one walk until Englert
doubled and Elmendorf singled in
the ninth. He struck out eight and
15 of the other 19 outs were
ground balls hit to the infield.

ried a Science News Special—"The
Unexplained," narrated by Rod Ser-
ling — in which one of the most
fantastic breakthroughs in modern
