PROFESSIONAL AIR DESIGN INC. 846-7767 Authorized Trane Dealer HOUSTON (A*)—James Street, the quarterback who led the Uni versity of Texas to the national collegiate football championship, drew a reprimand and public censure Monday from the South west Athletic Conference for “re grettable misconduct and undis ciplined behavior” in an April 18 baseball game. Also reprimanded and censured was Tommy Harmon, the Long horn catcher. Street, with a per fect game in his undefeated con ference record, is the star pitcher for the Texas baseball team that holds a T2-0 conference record. Monday’s action by faculty rep resentatives who govern the con ference resulted from a game with Baylor at Austin. On a squeeze play, the Baylor batter missed Street’s pitch and Harmon tagged out a Baylor baserunner between third and home. In the confusion, Street and Dutch Schroder, the Baylor coach, collided and Schroeder was knocked unconscious. Schroeder, coaching at third base, was rush ing to lodge a protest over the play with the home plate umpire. After two days of deliberation by the conference group, a pre pared announcement said Street’s “sharp bodily contact with the Baylor head coach, though appar ently impulsive rather than de liberate, was reprehensible and a discredit to him, his team, his university, and the Southwest Athletic Conference.” “A full consideration of the circumstances which immediately preceded the incident reveals that Texas catcher Tommy Harmon was guilty of an unnecessarily hard tag of a baserunner that apparently triggered the deplor able developments,” the announce ment said. Street, contacted at baseball workouts, said, “I think it is embarrassing, the entire situation is embarrassing. Maybe too much has been said about it. “I didn’t intentionally hit Schroeder. I think it was a col lision. I didn’t run into him, and I don’t say he ran into me. I didn’t intentionally go after the coach. I felt, standing there, that he saw me. I’m sorry it happened.” The Baylor faculty athletic committee made a motion that Street be suspended from further athletic competition, but after a 90-minute discussion the South west Conference decided on cen sure, a source told The Associated Press. He declined use of his name. Frank Erwin, chairman of the Texas Board of Regents, said in a statement: “James Street and Tommy Harmon have brought great credit to the University of Texas at Austin and they have the complete confidence and support of the Board of Regents of the UT System. At a time when many of our young people are engaging in campus riots, and disruptions these two are young men in whom not only all Texans but all of the people of this country can take pride.” The faculty group decided to appoint a special study commit tee on another matter involving Street. The quarterback withdrew from school after the football season but prior to mid-term examina tions and returned for the spring term without endangering his baseball eligibility. A conference rule sanctions such withdrawals provided the athlete is in good scholastic standing at the time. “The discussions brought up the matter of hardship cases should the rule be changed in any way and this led to the decision to appoint a study committee,” said Howard Grubbs, conference executive secretary. Grubbs said the rule has been in the books at least 25 years and has been used frequently by all schools. “It would have gone unnoticed this time had the incident in volved only a third string guard, said another conference official who declined to be quoted by name. Cliff Gustafson, the Texas baseball coach, also was admon ished for the “unsportsmanlike actions of his two players.” “The conference expects the proper University of Texas au thorities to assume responsibility in preventing a recurrence of such disturbing situations in the future,” the announcement said. In another action, the faculty group, without mentioning spe cific games, said that in the future the conference “will take increased cognizance of incidents of player conflict in athletic events.” “Coaches are to be responsj for the conduct of themselvesj of their players and the confj ence will assume a stem positii in judicial action on all aj situations in the future,” a mal statement said. Grubbs cited the Baylor-Tea baseball game, a Texas Tai Texas Christian basketball gsj last season, and a Baylor-Tea A&M basketball game a yearif as ^examples that prompted 4 general warning to all schools, BUSIER AGENCY REAL ESTATE • INSURANCE F.H.A.—Veterans and Conveational Uaiu ARM & HOME SAVINGS ASSOCIATION Home Office: Nevada, Mo. 3523 Texas Are.
