Rain fell for most of the meet soaking tracksters and spectators alike and at times making the footing for the pole vaulters and some running events treacherous. The speed-to-burn Aggies cap tured both sprints and tacked on victories in both relays but the depth-minded Owls swept the pole vault and broad jump to eke past A&M, 73 points to 72^ The other two teams, Texas Christian and Arkansas hardly figured in the overall meet as they could notch but 18 Vz and nine points respectively. Rockie Woods bested his fresh man nemisis Marvin Mills for the first time in the 100-yard dash but he had to blaze to a 9.3 read ing to do it, the best in the SWC this year. Mills finished second in 9.4 and Scott Hendricks and Donny Rogers both were timed in 9.6 to give A&M the top four places. Woods also produced the top time for the SWC by win ning the 220-yard dash in 20.9. Rogers and Hendricks tied for third in 21.4. Curtis Mills zipped to an ex pected win in the 440-yard dash but he was hardly pressed and clocked a relatively slow 46.8. With a first place by Ben Greathouse in the high jump at 6-9 and Ronny Lightfoot’s 64- 9% shot put win, the Aggies led for most of the meet until the results of the pole vault and broad jump were announced. The Owls took the first four places in the long jump and the first three places in the pole vault to get the points they needed to shade the Ags. But this unexpected perform ance by the Owls failed to take the shine off the Aggies’ two TAMU TOWN HALL PRESENTS For Civilian Student Week End SMITH plus TONY JOE WHITE G. Don Kellar led off the race and kept A&M with in striking distance as he came home trailing Rice by only five yards and handed the baton to Harold McMahan. McMahan, after a gruelling battle in the pole vault where he finished fourth, dropped the Aggies ten yards off as he gave the stick to Marvin Mills. The younger Mills brother made up eight on Rice’s Chip Grand jean as he slipped the baton to anchorman Curtis Mills. This Mills brother, who is the world’s record holder in the 440- yard dash, gave Bill Askey a run for the money as he poured it on and finally passed him on the final turn and outsprinted him to the tape as the Aggies posted a 3:09.7. (Photo by Mike Wright) Netters Tie Horns, 3-3 Omar Smith, the Aggies ten nis coach, kept his perfect home record intact against the Uni versity of Texas as his netters rose to the occasion Saturday to tie the Longhorns, 3-3. No Smith-coached Aggie squad has never lost to Texas on A&M Varsity Courts since he came to the campus in 1960. The matches were played in intermittant drizzle and the foot ing at times was less than per fect. Dickie Fikes turned in an impressive performance for the Aggies as he won his singles match over previously No. 1 ranked Longhorn Avery Rush, 6- 1, 4-6, and 6-1. Bruce Crumly lost to the pres ent Longhorn ace John Nelson 6-2 and 6-2 while Tommy Con nell dropped his match to Texas’ John Mozola, 6-4 and 6-3. Law- ton Parks of A&M downed Rick Murray, 6-2 and 6-4. In the doubles action, the Ag gies managed to gain a split.
