Winner Mike Lord Battles
For Big Linebacking Post
James Michael Lord, a native
Texan who migrated to Louisi
ana and then returned to the
Lone Star state, has a history of
winning in athletics.
Right now he’s primarily con
cerned with winning the middle
linebacker’s position as the Texas
Aggies go through spring foot
ball drills.
Mike Lord is a one-year letter-
man who’ll be playing his junior
season for the Aggies next fall.
He was born in Fort Worth
where he lived some 10 years.
Next he spent his junior high
Special Mile
WiH Be Run
An added attraction at Satur
day night’s quadrangular track
and field meet at Kyle Field will
be the “Masters Mile” that will
be run just before the meet’s
final event, the mile relay.
In the “Masters Mile,” there
will be two divisions for men
and an open division for females.
For the men, there will be a divi
sion for those 25 to 35 years of
age and another for those over
35. The one-division for females
will have no age limits.
Entrants should check in at
the registration desk on the in
field of Kyle Field Saturday
night. There will be no entry
fee.
Each entrant will have to pre
dict his running time for the
mile and the winner will be the
one who comes nearest his pre
dicted time. In the event of a
tie, the one with the fastest time
will be the winner.
The Aggies, TCU, Rice and
Arkansas will compete in the
quadrangular meet. Field events
will start at 6 p.m. and running
events at 7 p.m.
Admission will be $1 for adults
and 50 cents for students in high
school grades and lower. A&M
students will be admitted on their
activity tickets and A&M fac
ulty-staff members will get in on
football season book covers.
Teen Baseball
Calls Meeting
An organizational meeting for
Texas Teen-Age baseball (13-16
age group) has been set for 7
p.m. Thui’sday in the Brazos
Room of First Bank and Trust
in Bryan.
Marvin Tate, president of the
Brazos Valley Youth Association
for the Bryan-College Station
area, called the meeting and
urged all interested persons to
attend.
“Election of officers will be
one item of business,” Tate said.
“We’d like to have parents of
potential players to attend and
we’d also like to urge anyone
interested in coaching or man
aging a team to be on hand.”
Owls Near Title
The Rice Owls, having dis
posed of its three top pursuers,
are on a collision course for a
repeat of their 1969 champion
ship performance in the South
west Conference tennis standings
with a 20-4 record.
The Owls lead second place
SMU by 5 matches and have
only to play Baylor 2-10 and
Texas A&M 6-12 before being
declared the official champion.
Rice was upset by the Mus
tangs when they tied 3-3 Monday
but the Mustangs did not gain
anything but prestige from that
showing as they went in trailing
by five and came out down by
the same number.

There, in the shadows of LSU,
Mike developed into such a stand
out football player at Broadmoor
High that he won all-district
honors as a junior and schoolboy
All-American honors as a senior.

Broadmoor won the AAA state
title his junior year.
Mike was a two-way star, too.
He played offensive fullback and
tailback and defensive linebacker
and safety. He also ran track
and played the outfield in base
ball. His baseball skill was rec
ognized early as he played on
the Northside Babe Ruth League
championship team at San An
tonio in 1964.
At Texas A&M, Lord was an
outstanding rover on the un
beaten Fish team of 1968 and
he saw a lot of duty on the
varsity last season, as a rover
and linebacker.
A sharp, smart performer,
Lord has been calling defensive
signals in A&M’s early spring
work. In the spring’s first scrim
mage he intercepted a pass and
raced 25 yards for a touchdown,
.getting a key, clearing block
from defensive guard Van Odom
around the five-yard line.
At 6-0 and 202, Lord isn’t an
exceptionally large lad but he’s
wound tightly and is a contact
football player.
