HEAD COACH GENE STALLINGS
Cooking Time
On the Brazos
By Mike Wright
Spring has sprung, fall has fell, summer’s here and so is
the hideous time of spring training.
Several years ago when Gene Stallings returned to Texas
A&M to rebuild the Aggie football fortunes, he walked into a
mighty sad situation. The Aggies were rebounding off a 1-9
season under Hank Foldburg. The first year under Stallings
the Aggies upset Georgia Tech, Houston and edged Rice to
post a 3-7 record. The next year was better with a 4-5-1
mark. Then came the year of the Aggie comeback and
bumpersticker sales as the Cadets romped through seven
straight wins to take the Southwest Conference champion
ship and the Cotton Bowl.
The following year was awaited with much anticipation,
bumpersticker sales rocketed with slogans of “The Aggies Are
Back”, “Next Year Is Here,” and numerous other petty
threats aimed at an institute of higher learning approximately
90 miles west of B-CS.
Well, as history and teasippers faithfully remind us, the
Aggies took a nose dive and returned to the rut of a 3-7
season. It’s true that injuries took their toll among the
Cotton Bowl Champs, but recently one of the assistant
coaches, who has left for other pastures, made the statement
that the coaching' staff had lost “contact with the seniors the
past two years.” With last season’s 3-7 rating, it seems to
point the finger at somebody for missing the boat.
Aggies were rocked by a news story stating that some
shakeups were in the wind for members of the Aggie staff. In
fact some Dallas Aggie-exs went as far as to blame other
A&M sports coaches of starting such damaging rumors.
To make a long story short, those wholesale changes
came to pass and a new slate of assistant coaches appeared on
the scene, with some remaining coaches assuming new duties.
So now the 1970 program is being planned in spring
training. Much has to be accomplished in the remaining days
of practice, because opponents, including L.S.U., Ohio State,
and Michigan, lie in wait. The Aggies have recruited well for
the past two years, enlarged their stadium to hold overflow
crowds, and now are installing astro-turf to protect fragile
knees. There is one missing ingredient for such a fantastic
recipe—a winning varsity football team. With the schedule
facing the Aggies in 1970 it is going to take a heckofa cook
to whip the ingredients into a suitable frosting for an already
sagging cake.
