Ags Stop Bears But Not Tech
The Texas A&M tennis team
defeated the Baylor Bears 5-1 in
a Southwest Conference tennis
match here Monday afternoon
after a disappointing weekend
showing saw the Aggies lose to
Michigan State and Texas Tech
in their first conference match.
The Aggies suffered their
fourth 5-4 defeat of the season
Friday to Michigan State as they
dropped two of three doubles
matches after splitting the singles
matches.
Dickie Fikes, the Aggies’ num
ber one singles player, won the
first match over Dusty Rhoads
to start the Aggies off right but
they dropped the next two
matches before Tommy Connell
and Mike Mills won to even things
up.
Fikes and David Chastain de
feated Tom Gray and DeArmond
Briggs 6-4 in their opening set
but the Spartan twosome came
back to win a hard-fought 14-12
third set after tieing the match
with a 6-4 win.
Lindsey Kroll and Lawton Park
scored the Aggies’ only doubles
win over Mike Madura and Rick
Ferman, 6-4 6-2.
The Aggies dropped their con
ference opener Saturday to a
good Texas Tech team 6-0.

The Texas A&M golf team
opened defense of its Southwest
Conference golf crown Sautrday
with a 4 1 / 4-l 1 / £ win over TCU and
play Texas in a match that could
decide the SWC champion this
afternoon in Austin.
The Longhorns defeated Rice
6-0 last week and Saturday nipped
SMU 3 1 / ^-2 : !4 to give them a
9 1 /^-2 1 /^ record.
Steve Veriato shot a 70 to lead
the Aggies and defeated the vis
itors Don Dodgen 2-1.
Richard Ellis won his match
3- 2 over Eddie Vossler of TCU
while shooting a 71.
Tommy Johnson and Duke But
ler shot 75’s for A&M but Butler
was beaten by Leroy Pearson,
4- 3.
Johnson defeated Henry Ellis,
1-up.
Last year the Aggies nipped
Texas 3%-2 1 ,^. to lay the founda
tion for a 2% match lead over
Texas. Tech was third 10 matches
back of the Aggies.
Aggie Coach Omar Smith said
he feels the Raiders should battle
Texas to the wire for the runner-
up spot behind Rice.
Tech lost its conference opener
to the Owls in Houston Friday,
5-1.
While Tech was defeating the
Aggies the unheralded SMU Mus
tangs tied the Longhorns 3-3.
The Aggies won their first con
ference match Monday with a 5-1
decision over Baylor.
A&M journeys to Dallas Wed
nesday to play the Mustangs who
placed one notch behind the Ags
a year ago in fifth place. A&M
won last year’s dual match, 4-2.
Rice leads the Southwest Con
ference play after Monday with
a 5-1 mark with Tech holding
down second with a 7-5 mark.

ball coach Gene Stallings has an
nounced that Barney Welch, a
former Aggie . football star, has
been hired as recruiting coordi
nator and assistant football coach
at A&M.
Welch, a well-known SWC foot
ball official and an insuranceman
in College Station, will join the
A&M staff in September.
“Barney is a great individual
and I know he will contribute
a great deal to our program,”
Stallings said.
“I love A&M and I love ath
letics,” Welch said. “I think a
great deal of Coach Stallings and
his staff and I want to contribute
as much as I can toward’s A&M’s
athletic success.”

He was graduated in January,
1948 and immediately became di
rector of intramural athletics at
A&M. In 1961 he went into the
insurance business with Mercan
tile Security and has been with
that company ever since, except
for a one-year stint of active
military duty.
Welch, now 47, was married to
the former Jane Porter of Steph
enville in 1943. They have a son,
Russell, 26 and a daughter, Mrs
Neill Wait, 21.
Five Swimmers
Welch was born in Hico, Tex.,
but grew up in Stephenville where
he played high school football,
basketball, tennis and track. He
entered Texas A&M in September,
1941 and played freshman and
sophomore football before enter
ing military service.
He served 36 months as a tech
nical sergeant in an infantry unit
of the Third Army in Europe.
Following his discharge, he re
turned to Texas A&M and played

Texas A&M swim coach Pat
Patterson will take five swimmers
to the National AAU Champion
ships in Cincinnati, Ohio, Thurs
day through Sunday.
The swimmers, who will enter
the medley relay, 400-yard free
style relay, and 800-yard freestyle
relay, are Mike Hicks, Doug Car-
son, Colin Dunn, Eric Wolff and
Kim Blakeman. All except Dunn
are freshmen. Dunn is a senior.
