Anderson also listed the sewage problem as critical. “The university doesn’t want the city to use the present land fill any longer,” he said, “so we have to locate a new area, employ an additional man as well as buy additional equipment to handle it.” The problem is, he added, that wherever the city wants to put it, no one wants it. Anderson said he hoped for ap proval this year on the HUD Workable Plan Status for federal aid, particularly in housing. “The requirements to fulfill this are almost unlimited,” he said. “Time has been used for surveys in the needed areas, and this is only partial fulfillment. Due to the daily increasing traffic, particularly during rush hours, he said, many intersections need stop lights. “This is not completely a prob lem of the city’s,” he said. “When the intersection at South College and University Drive was con structed from the old circle, $30,000 was set aside for stop lights. Then the Texas Highway Department informed us that the lights weren’t needed.” He said he also would like to see the park include an Olympic size swimming pool, possibly built with the help of federal funds. The only public pool presently in College Station, he said, is the one on campus. Ransdell included the new park as one of three reasons for run ning for re-election. The other reasons he listed as the need for improving and extending the wa ter and sewer system, and the need for new and improved streets. “We’ve needed these improve ments for a long time,” he said, “and I’m running with the hope of getting them accomplished in the near future.” He said the city’s doing every thing it can to finance these im provements without going into debt. Blood Drive To Begin Wednesday THE BATTALION Tuesday, April 7, 1970 College Station, Texas Page 3 Soapbox 9 Forum This year’s Aggie Blood Drive will be from 8-5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the basement of the Memorial Student Center. The drive, dedicated to the memory of the late President Earl Rudder, is sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity, and is admin istered by the Student Senate Welfare Committee. The blood collected will be used for research in heart and blood diseases by the Wadley Founda tion of Molecular Medicine in Dallas. Any person who donates blood will be able to receive blood for himself and his immediate family free during the following year. Each donor will receive a wallet sized card acknowledging his do nation and listing his blood type. The card will allow a donor to receive any quantity needed by contacting the welfare committee. People wishing to donate blood should wear short sleeve shirts or blouses, recommended William Cronrath, APO public relations chairman. Civilian students under 21 years of age will need a note from their parents or guardians giving permission to donate blood, he said. Students who have not prev iously registered may give blood at a time convenient to them, Cronrath said. “Anyone who has signed up but can’t be there at that time can donate at any other time he is free,” he added.
