Aggies Go On Rampage To Tame Tigers
^: • • ■;'' T
HOT BATSMAN—R. J. Englert singles off of Missouri’s
Mike Grim to score Aggie pitcher Bruce Katt in the second
inning. Englert went four for five at the plate in leading
the Aggie 17 hit attack. The Aggies resume SWC play
next weekend in Dallas Against Southern Methodist Uni
versity. (Photo by Mike Wright)
Schayes T abbed As
New Buffalo Coach
BUFFALO, N. Y. OP)—Dolph
Schayes, who made every Na-
t i o n a 1 Basketball Association
playoff in his 18 years as a player
or coach, became coach Tuesday
of the new Buffalo NBA team.
the combine of Donovan and
Schayes gives Buffalo as strong
a combination of top personnel
in the front office as any team
in the NBA.
Schayes, 41, supervisor of the
league’s game officials since 1966,
was appointed by the team’s pres
ident, Carl Scheer, who until re
cently had been the NBA’s assist
ant commissioner.
Eddie Donovan, who resigned
as general manager of the New
York Knicks to take a similar
position with Buffalo, told a news
conference that Schayes was “our
first choice to guide the team.”
Scheer said he believes that
Schayes was a star center at
New York University before be
ginning his pro career with the
old Syracuse Nationals in 1948.
He played 15 years with Syra
cuse before the club moved to
Philadelphia for the 1963-64 sea
son.
He became player-coach of the
team, renamed the 76ers that sea
son and served as coach for the
following two years until he was
fired. He then took over the
NBA executive post.
Coach’s Mark Finally Falls
In 1950, A&M track Coach
Charlie Thomas was a member
of the track team at Cleveland,
a town of approximately 7,000
people in Liberty County in
Southeast Texas.
One March Saturday during
the track season Thomas and his
teammates journeyed to Pales
tine in East Texas to run in the
Dogwood Relays.
He was high-point man in the
meet, winning the 100 and 220
yard dashes.
His 220 yard dash time of 22.5
was good for the record in the
meet and not until last Friday
March 27, 20 years later was that
record broken.
Sherman Graves of Groesbeck
ran a 22.2 to erase the longest
existing record in the relays.
Thomas later ran his college
track at the University of Texas
where in 1954 he was voted by
Track and Field News as the top
220 man in the world.
He ran a 20.2 in a 200 meter
dash at the Texas Relays and
holds the Memorial Stadium 220
yard dash mark of 20.5.

The Texas A&M baseball team
blasted Missouri Tiger pitcher
Mike Grim for 8 runs and 11 hits
in the first three innings here
Tuesday afternoon to provide the
framework for an 9-2 win over
the Big Eight school on Kyle
Field.
Lefthander Bruce Katt extend
ed his scoreless string to 11 in
nings before being stopped and
relievers Hardy Frazier and Pat
Jamison put the finishing touch
es on with four superb innings of
relief for A&M.
Katt blanked the Tigers in the
first two innings then allowed
two runs in the third, the first he
has allowed since the first inning
he pitched this season.
The Aggies started with a bang
as Butch Ghutzman and R. J.
Englert who had seven hits be
tween them singled. Dave Elmen-
dorf forced Englert at second
driving in Ghutzman who had
gone to third on Englert’s blow
to center. Billy Hodge drew a
walk and while he was in the
process of doing that Elmendorf
moved to second on a passed ball
and stole third.
Boyd Hadaway followed with
a long fly just in front of the 360
foot sign in right center that al
lowed Elmendorf to score after
the catch.
Chris Sans then poked a high
drive over the fence in center
field to give the Aggies a four
run cushion that was never really
threatened.
Katt helped his on way with a
single leading off the second and
when the left fielder mishandled
the ball, the sophomore from New
Braunfels sped to second.
Englert’s second of four
straight singles sent him across
with the Aggies fifth run.
Missouri tallied their only two
runs in the third as Tommy Nunn
slapped a liner to left with the
bases loaded to score both runs.
Hadaway singled to start the
Aggie third and Sans followed
with a hard shot to right but the
Aggie first baseman made too
wide a turn and the Tigers picked
him off.
In a run down Hadaway was
tagged out at third and Sans was
safe at second. He moved to
third on a wild pitch.
Jim Raley picked up the Aggies
third consecutive single to score
Sans and Danny Ragland singled
making it four hits in a row.
One out later Ghutzman singled
driving in the second run of the
inning and Englert scored Rag
land with another single.
Barry Anderson took over for
Missouri in the fourth and the
lanky southpaw allowed the Ag
gies only 6 hits and one run over
the last five innings.
The Aggies got to Anderson in
the seventh as he walked Jim
Sampson and Raley and Frazier
singled to load the bases with
none out.
Ronnie LaGrone then bounced
into a double play that forced
Sampson at home and him at
first.
Ghutzman followed with an in
field hit as he beat out a liner
in the hole scoring Raley.
Frazier relieved Katt in the
sixth and held the Tigers to a
single for three innings and Jami
son put the clamps on the visitors
in the ninth.
A&M returns to conference play
traveling to Dallas for a three
game series with S M U Friday
and Saturday.
