The Aggies set 10 school records while finishing fourth in the Southwest Conference meet held in Dallas. The encouraging aspect for coach Pat Patterson is that most of the record breakers are only freshmen. Colin Dunn, Robert Dommel, Hank Paup and diver Eddy Grant are the only seniors who swam in the SWC meet. Dunn set a school mark with a 53.1 time in the prelims of the 100-yard butterfly and swam on the 400-yard medley relay which set a record with a 3:38.9 clock ing. Junior Tom Sparks was the only other upperclassman to share in the record setting. He had a time of 56.4 in the 100-yard backstroke. Eric Wolff, Mike Hicks, Doug Carson, Kim Blakeman, John Mc- Cleary and Gordon Taylor took care of the other records. All are freshmen. Wolff lowered the standards in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.1) and 1,650-yard freestyle (17:43.2) and swam on the 400-yard medley relay team with Hicks, Carson and Dunn. Hicks established school marks in the 200-yard individual med ley (2:03.6) and 400-yard indi vidual medley (4:27.0) along with his relay performance. Carson swam the 100-yard breastsroke in 1:02.7 for a rec ord, and Blakeman turned in a 49.4 in the 100-yard freestyle for another mark. The final record was set by the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Sparks, Blakeman, McCleary and Taylor with a 3:18.4. “We were real pleased with the season and very encouraged for the future,” Patterson said, “Nearly every swimmer improv ed every week. If we can get the top high school swimmers we're after, we should be in fine shape next year. All we need is a more depth.” Rain Takes Toll In Softball B- Team Downs McClennan; Varsity Plays 7 Straight The Texas A&M B team de feated McClennan Community College 5-1 in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader Monday afternoon on Kyle Field. The sec ond game was rained out. The winning pitcher was. Char lie Jenkins, freshman from Fort Worth Arlington Heights, in his first start since coming from bas ketball. Jenkins struck out eight and walked one. A scheduled doubleheader be tween Texas A&M and Sam Hou ston State was rained out Tues day afternoon. The twinbill will be made up Thursday, coach Tom Chandler said. Southwest Conference play starts Friday and Saturday as the Aggies host Baylor for a three- game series. The nine-inning first game wil start at 1:30 p.m. A seven-inning game will follow on Friday with a nine-inning tilt set for 2 p.m. Saturday. Intramural softball is batting a feeble .250, in games played. Class B matches were rained out Tuesday for the third straight day. Only 12 of the 48 scheduled have been played. In those games, wins were tak en by Squadrons 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 12 and Companies C-l, 1-1, A-2, D-2, F-2 and G-2. E-2 had a 10- run first inning but couldn’t tread the plate again and lost to A-2, 13-10. E-l was defeated in five in nings by D-2 piling up an 8-run lead. If a team is behind by eight runs at the end of five innings or later, the game is over. D-2 took it, 14-6. C-l’s success was Chess Tournament When Maine’s basketball team recently beat Vermont 98-83 it snapped an eight-game losing streak.
