of Scotty Hendricks, Curtis Mills,
Marvin Mills, and Rocky Woods.
The team was timed at the finish
line in 40.1.
Curtis Mills won the open quar
ter with a 47.8 reading. This wad
the first time for him to run the
event outdoors because of an in
jured ankle.
Other Aggie winners were Da
vid Prince in the 120-yard high
hurdles in 14.7 seconds. Fresh
man Donny Rogers finished third
in the event at 15 flat as did Glen
Blahuta. Marvin Mills and Rockie
Woods battled down the 100-yard
dash to finish in a dead heat at
9.7 seconds. After deliberation
Mills was awarded first place. The
mile relay finished well ahead of
Rice University with a 3:13.5
clocking.
Also placing for the Aggies in
various events was Ben Great-
house at 6-7 and John Taylor at
6-4 in the high jump to give the
Aggies the top three slots in the
event. For the second week in a
row, A&M has dominated this
event to add to the point total.
Sam Skinner placed fourth in
the mile run at 4:22.3. This repre
sents the best time for him this
year in competition. Lightfoot

Coach Tom Chandler is trying
his best to get the 1970 Aggie
baseball team some competition
before they open conference play
Friday against Baylor and the
schedule this week shows it.
Weather permitting, that’s get
ting to be the name of the game
so far with six of the A&M con
tests nixed because of bad weath
er, the Aggies will play seven
games at home this week. Tues
day afternoon they kick it off
with a doubleheader with the Sam
Houston State Bearkats, who have
already given the Cadets both of
their losses en route to an early
3-2 mark.
The Aggies will host Houston
Baptist in another twinbill Wed
nesday afternoon and then open a
three-game stand against the
Bears Friday and Saturday. On
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday
the doubleheaders will start at 1
p.m. at Kyle Field and Saturday’s
single game will start at 2 p.m.
The Aggies’ San Antonio trip
this past week was very success
ful as they nailed down three vic
tories, beating St. Mary’s 5-2 and
5-0 and then blanking St. Ed
ward’s of Austin, 8-0.
Thus far, only one regular is
hitting over .300 for the Aggies
and the Cadets have but a .244
overall mark. Billy Hodge, the
starting catcher, has collected four
hits in 12 trips for a .333 mark.
Centerfielder David Elmendorf,
with four hits in 19 plate appear
ances, has belted two homeruns
and a double for 11 total bases.
Southpaw Doug Rau and right
hander Paul Czerwinski each has
a 1-0 pitching mark while Dave
Benesh is 1-1 and Charles Kelley
is 0-1. Rau and Benesh are slated
to pitch against Sam Houston
State Tuesday.
Otherwise, Aggie starters will
be Hodge, catcher; Chris Sans, lb;
Butch Ghutzman, 2b; Jim Raley,
SS; Danny Ragland, 3b; Larry
Smith or R. J. Englert, If; Elmen
dorf, cf; and Boyd Hadaway, rf.

The well-traveled Aggie tennis
team will hit the road again this
weekend when they journey to
Houston to participate in the 12th
annual Rice University Invita
tional Collegiate Tennis Tourna
ment Thursday through Saturday
on the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium
on the Rice campus.
Coach Omar Smith’s netters
have played seven of their ten
dual matches away from home
this season and despite having
only one senior, Bruce Crumley,
they have won 6 of those 10.
Dick Fikes, David Chastain,
Crumley, Lindsey Kroll, Carl Jae-
dicke, Lawton Park and Mike Mills
will man the rackets for A&M
against the 16-team field.
Competition in the field could
be tougher than the court they are
playing on as the young Aggies
face some of the top teams in the
nation in Trinity, Rice, Corpus
Christi, Brigham Young and Utah.
Defending champion Trinity is
back to defend its team title which
it won by nipping the Rice Owls
19-18. Trinity finished third in
the NCAA Tournament last year
and Rice fourth.
Mike Estep of Rice defending
singles champion will return to
defend his title but in the doubles
division Trinity’s sophomore dou
bles team of Bob McKinley and
Dick Stockton will not because
Stockton is currently out with a
broken foot. McKinley will have
Paul Gerken, who transferred
from Stanford as a playing part
ner in this years tournament.
