HE BA1 Editor: Concerning the recent letter in the Listen Up, I would like to say that the writer is indeed as he said acting like a little boy. To blame his conduct on his en vironment is a very poor excuse. If I am not mistaken, what makes man better than common animals is that he has a will and can direct his actions accordingly. I will not tell Mr. Jerry Kirk that Highway 6 runs both ways, and that he can better his position by leaving. That would be writing off the situation too easily by using a trite and pointless argu ment. Rather I would appeal to his better judgement in hopes that he would remedy the prob lems he claims to face. Whooping or even “a very cul tured cat-call,” contrary to popu lar belief here, is not a natural urge. It may be “good bull” in some eyes, but I’m sure the ma jority disapproves. I would suggest that instead of blaming his lack of manners on abbreviated hemlines, it would be more to his advantage if he would treat young women with respect. Otherwise he may find himself still living in beautiful Legett Hall, without a phone or money to go to Austin or La Grange, and advertising for a date in The Battalion. Editor: The purpose of this letter is to clarify a statement credited to me in “Senate Recommends Court of Appeals,” The Battalion, March 5, 1970. There is no opposition on my part to permit the university president to approve the student appointees to the Court of Appeals. As one of the persons assisting in the final draft of the proposal, my approval was given at the time for the provision. My senate de bate, as reported in The Bat talion, made brief reference to the seemingly inappropriateness of a presidential approval while the students lacked the privilege of approving the faculty. I wish not to leave the impression that the amendment I proposed was based on that reasoning alone. By itself, it appears somewhat of a childish argument. It is my strongest contention and desire to permit Senate rati fication of the faculty appointees. There are other reasons, though. The appointed judges may have the respect of the president but conceivably the same respect and rapport may not be accorded by the students. The student, also, must feel he has something with the selection of judges since the results are forces affecting him and he alone. In the final anlysis, the request for Senate ratifica tion is not out of line, but is right and quite just. One cause for turmoil American campuses is that stu dents feel they have no influence on those forces that affect them. My attempt in proposing the said amendment to the Court of Ap peals, therefore, was an attempt to moderate such fears. I am sor ry that I failed to catch this very important proviso before the final draft was approved. Milton Garrett Editor: Too often and too painful have been the severe injustices suf fered by Blacks (students, em ployees, visitors) on this campus. Appeals have been made to Uni versity officials, community lead ers and other students—all with out noticeable success. One does not need to point out the painful results of institution alized racism. Needless I say that no worse form of racism can be contrived on this campus. What is essential, and many years overdue, is that we define a starting point. For being vic tims of institutions, unknowingly, we have lost sight of our per spective. Therefore we must de fine as clearly as possible our problems and purposely avoid formation of formal committee. As repeatedly shown in the past, formal committees only impede progress. Special methods—“think tanks,” encounters, case studies- would produce better results. Formal committees should after wards be formed as end results for assessment and evaluation of information obtained, and for recommendations of solutions. The problems of institutional injustice (unlike our severe trans gressions of women’s rights), when proceeding unchanged could surely provide A&M and its com munity a turbulent if not catas trophic future.
