A&M’s Smith Goes Aggie Wrestlers To Wake Forest The Texas A&M Wrestling team traveled to Austin Satur day and was surprised by a strong t.u. team. They were also surprised to have only one backer in the stands, a female. The Ags couldn’t seem to be able to get started. Glenn Burt, at 118, fell victim to a good cross body ride and lost his match by decision. A&M did not improve as Terry Pritchard was pinned at 126. John Paul Jones, a fresh man, was decisioned in a closer match than the score (13-7) in dicated but Mike Snyder, who just moved up from 126 to 142, was pinned. Gary Leverett at 150 was decisioned in a very close match, 3-1. A&M Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Gene Stall ings announced today that defen sive end coach Ralph Smith has resigned in order to accept a post as defensive line coach at Wake Forest University in Winston- Salem, N. C. Aggie Golfers Off To Laredo Coach Henry Ransom and a six-man Texas A&M golf team left Tuesday morning for Laredo where they’ll compete in the Bor der Olympics golf tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Richard Ellis, senior from Pam- pa, led qualifying rounds to fin ish number one on the squad. Steve Veriato, a freshman from Hilo, Hawaii, finished second. Senior Duke Butler was third, followed by sophomores Tommy Shelton and Tommy Gilbert and junior college transfer Dean Fau- cett. Butler and Shelton are from College Station; Gilbert is from Jacksboro and Faucett, who played at Schriener Institute, is from Garland. All six will play in the stroke "play tournament. The low four scores will count in the team total. At this point in the match the score was 19-0. However at 158 Andrew Beck, the captain of the team, was about to get things started for the Aggies. From the beginning of his match he was in command and after the early part of the second period it was all over for the Longhorn. At 167 Jerry Chapin made it increasing ly clear that the Ags were out to win this match. As he dominated his opponent for the entirety of his match to win by decision 12-1. At 177 Dave Herzik, a junior out classed his opponent in a tight one and by decision 13-11. In the 190 lb. class A1 Leskinen wrestled his way to an 8-1 lead at the be ginning of the third period. Later in the third period Leskinen pinned his opponent for the Ags final five points. The score was now 19-16 and if A&M were able to field a heavyweight they would have had a chance. As it were they were forced to forfeit the last match and come home de feated for the first time by a score of 24-16. Stallings revealed that Wake Forest Coach Cal Stoll had con tacted him earlier about talking to Smith concerning the job at Wake Forest. Smith, in accepting the new post, said, “I’m deeply apprecia tive to Coach Stallings for having given me the opportunity to get into college coaching. I’ve gained valuable experience in my five years here and I’m looking for ward to the new challenge at Wake Forest.” Smith, a 31-year-old bachelor, played defensive end for the Tex as Aggies three seasons, 1958-59- 60 and was graduated in the spring of 1961 with a degree in physical education. The Ags wrestle t.u. again, here on March 14 at 7:00 p.m. By then they hope to have a heavy weight (there must be one some where on campus).
