150,000 Mailed to GIs
Valentines Sent to Vietnam
SAN FRANCISCO <A>)—-More
than 100 cartons containing al
most 150,000 Valentines were
mailed here Tuesday to GIs in
Vietnam.
The handmade heart-filled
greetings will arrive more than
a week before Valentine’s Day.
“They’ll be a little early—but
better early than late,” said Carl
Uibelhoer, national service office
of the Military Order of the Pur
ple Heart, when told the Valen
tines would be in Vietnam in two
days.
The Naval Air Reserve Train
ing Unit at Jacksonville, Fla.,
came to the order’s rescue Mon
day night after National Airlines
was shut down by a strike.
A Navy plane flew the Valen
tines from Jacksonville to Oak
land, Calif., Monday night be
cause National could not fulfill
its offer to carry the cargo with
out charge.
The order, a service foundation,
is sponsoring for a second year a
“GI Wish You’d Be My Valentine”
campaign. It is intended to bridge
the communication gap between
servicemen and young people.
Uibelhoer said the Valentines
“come from every state of the
union with the exception of Alas
ka,” three U. S. territories and
five foreign countries.
“They will be distributed in 27
hospitals overseas where combat
wounded are brought or evacu
ated. Beyond this, they will go
to troops in the combat zones,"
he said.
The Valentines were collected
in Jacksonville, Fla., by Karl
Busch, field director of the order.
In an effort to save money, Busck
had contacted National Airlines.
When Busch learned that Na
tional was on strike, he was
aghast, but the Navy came to
his rescue.
Volunteer Marines trucked the
cartons across the bay Tuesday
to a loading dock here for mail
ing to Southeast Asia.
COURCHEVEL
UNFLAGGING—Should a performer break stride or rou
tine in drum and bugle corps competition, it would subtract
from a marching unit’s point total. So Sandra Grochowski,
13, maintains form despite the flag that flopped over her
face during judging in suburban Greendale, Wis. (AP

Sea Grant Associates to Tour
Research Vessel in Galveston
A&M faculty and staff mem
bers associated with Sea Grant
or oceanography programs will
tour the 400-foot research vessel
Glomar Challenger Sunday in
Galveston.
Global Marine, Inc., of Los An
geles and Scripps Institution of
Oceanography, managing insti
tution for the Deep Sea Drilling
Project, will host the 1 p.m. tour,
according to Dr. William R. Bry
ant, A&M oceanographer and co
chief scientist on Leg Ten of
DSDP.
Approximately 200 faculty,
staff and graduate students are
expected to travel to Galveston
for the tour.
Leg Ten will leave Corsicana
Feb. 11 on a 48-day expedition to
study the aspects of origin and
development of the Gulf of Mex
ico.
The 10,500-ton vessel arrives
Thursday for dry dock repairs,
Dr. Bryant noted.
Glomar Challenger was built
in 1967-68 at Orange, Tex. It
has a 142-foot derrick for re
trieving sediment cores from
oceanic areas.
Dr. Bryant pointed out the
ship recently made the deepest
water drilling. The ship rested
over 20,150 feet of water to take
a 506-foot core.
Its deepest floor penetration is
3,321 feet to take a core sample,
Dr. Bryant added.
Even then the slopes were some
thing to see—and ski.
Being a novice at the sport, I
took many a spill and almost
invariably after one some 4-year-
old French kid would skid to a
stop three inches from me and
ask if I had hurt myself. It’s
quite easy to see why the French
take home all the Olympic ski
medals.
The night life in Courchevel
was disappointing to many of us,
the main reason being the lack
of availability of French females
who spoke English. It’s kind of
hard to get your point across
using sign language.
During our stay some of us
took side trips to Paris, Geneva,
or other towns, getting as much
exposure to the European scene
as we could.
Most of us stayed in Courchevel
the entire time. Courchevel is a
village-type ski resort on the side
of a mountain. It’s a beautiful
town with a lot of nice people.
