Main — Phone 822-1328 Bryan, Texas Two More Coaches Leave A&M Gene Stallings, athletic direc tor and head football coach, an nounced Monday that two of his coaches would not be with the Texas A&M organization next season. Lide Huggins and Don Wat son picked up their walking pa pers amid controversy concern ing the coaching turnover at A&M. That followed an earlier resignation by Loyd Taylor, who accepted the job of athletic di rector and head football coach at Tarleton State. Huggins, the Aggies’ defensive backfield coach since he joined the staff in August of 1965, ac cepted a similar position at West Virginia University. He was a halfback at Mullins, South Caro lina High and then a safety at the University of South Carolina for three years. He recruited in West Texas for the Aggies. Watson, a former Aggie player himself, returned to his alma mater to coach in December, 1964 after being an assistant coach at South Carolina. He was a Na tional Back-Of-The-Week and played in the 1956 Blue-Gray game after a brilliant schoolboy career at Franklin High School. He was a recruiter for A&M in the Houston area and has an nounced no plans for the future. There were, however, several versions concerning whether Watson resigned or was fired but the former coach insists that he resigned. The Church..For a Fuller Life..For You.. Our line is always busy Marilyn deserves an "A” in Communications. Unfortunately, that is not one of her courses. Do you suppose when we were young we had less to talk about? Fewer opinions worth stating? Quieter friends? Anyway, home was never like this! Still, apart from the inconvenience, I have no strong objec tions to Marilyn’s monopoly of the wires. Indeed, it has served to remind me more than once of the tremendous need of this youthful generation for the right kind of friends and the right sense of values. Fortunately, our church has been an important influence on Marilyn’s life in both areas. Religious education has fostered moral and religious convictions which are shaping her character. Whether it’s "girl-talk” or "boy-talk” that is keeping our line busy—it’s just part of the normal, wholesome growing-up of a teen-ager. I told him I’d look for another job and then I’d resign. He (Stall ings) said that he would talk it over with Spec Gammon, A&M sports information director, about the best way to release it and then get in touch with me.” Watson, who acknowledged past differences with Stallings, said if he hadn’t resigned, he would not have been fired. "I think I would have been given a lessor position on the staff just to embarrass me,” he said. Stallings, contacted later at Denver City, where he was to speak at a football banquet Mon day night, declined to comment any further. The latest departures leave five assistants from the 1969 staff still on hand. They are Elmer Smith, Dee Powell, Bud Moore, Jack Hurlbut, and Ralph Smith.
