He will also run Jan. 30 in the Wanamaker Milrose Games at Madison Square Garden in New York City. (Photo by Mike Wright) Mills Will Run In Houston Curtis Mills, Texas A&M’s world record (44.7) quartermiler, is the type of athlete who gets better each year. The Aggie junior has been steadily improving since his old er brother, Vernon, encouraged him to go out for track as a ninth grader at Lufkin Dunbar. From the way he has burned up the boards so far in this year’s indoor meets, he is still improv ing. At the pace Mills is going this year, he should be in great shape February 13-14 when he com petes in the 300-yard dash in the second annual Astrodome-Feder ation National Indoor Champion ships. Because the speedy junior and two freshmen named Willie Blackmon of Houston Wheatley and Marvin Mills, Curtis’ young er brother from Lufkin Dunbar, A&M will be pre-meet favorites. The Aggies should dominate the sprints and sprint relays. In high school, Curtis made barely a splash in Coach Elmer Redd’s vast pool of track and field stars, but all of that has changed now. Ironically another youngster, George Harrison, who got most of the publicity when he and Mills were in high school, will be running in the Astrodome meet but this time he will be hard pressed to overshadow his form er teammate. Harrison, who anchored Texas Southern University’s distance medley relay team to a 10:46.4 victory, will be competing in the college division. Harrison dominated the high school scene so completely, it wasn’t until Mills’ freshman year at A&M that people realized he was a member of the 1964-65-66 AAA state TIL champions. When the gun sounds to start the 300-yard dash in the Astro dome there will hardly be a spec tator in the stands who won’t be conscious of Mills who passed up the event last year. Ag Cagers Hit Road The Texas Aggie basketball team, after a come-from-behind victory over the Texas Long horns last Tuesday, take a break from conference play this Satur day as they travel to Ruston, La., for an 8 p.m. bout with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. A&M now has a season record of 7-5 with a 2-1 conference mark, including a win over Ar kansas and a loss to Baylor to go with the Texas win. The Bulldogs will show the Aggies one of the tallest teams they will encounter all year with 7-1 Senior Charles Bishop leading the way. Other probable starters are guard George Corley (18.4), an All-Gulf States performer, George Thorton (6-4), Mike Dur ham (6-9), Mike Green (6-10), and Bud Dean (6-4). Last year the Aggies polished off the Bull dogs 102-83 in College Station. A&M is expected to open with their regular starting five in cluding Bill Cooksey, Pat Kava- naugh, Steve Niles, Chuck Smith and Mike Heitmann. The next conference action for the Cadets will be next Tuesday at 8 p.m. when they invade Hous ton for a clash with the highly- regarded Rice Owls. The Aggie Fish will tangle with the Owlets in a 5:45 prelim. The team from the unit com manded by Richard J. Oates blanked Company M-l to make one touchdown sufficient margin in the Wednesday title game. M-l never got past F-l’s 20 yard line. A 77-yard scoring drive mount ed primarily on running plays was closed by Jimmy Griffith’s three-yard sweep. Mike Koelza kicked the extra point. Squadron 2 displayed balanced scoring by Tom Bain (16), Ken Johse (14) and Ed Duryea (12) in knocking off Squadron 11, 52- 34, in basketball semifinals. In the outfit’s first playoff win, a 54-50 success over F-2, the three players hit for 14, 17 and 11, respectively. Company B-2 takes a potent offense against Squadron 2 in the championship match. B-2 bested C-l, 28-24, and Squadron 1, 56- 37, with Charles Crews, Steven Hanson and Tom Kincy the major contributors. Alan Waggoner, Donald Helton, Roger Malow, Bill McCharan, Rob Rawlinson and Rob Norwood pitched Law Hall to the Class C horseshoe championship. ■ Ralph's pizza SMORGASBORD All You Can Eat 5 to 7 Monday Thru Thursday East Gate Only MARYLAND CLUB - SHURFINE MAXWELL HOUSE - FOLGER S COFFEE "YOUR CHOICE' i Lb Can i L* Limit 1 With $5.00 or More Purchase.
