Ags Wrestle Steers To Stay In Race

The Texas Aggies staged a
fine second half comeback last
night in noisy Gregory Gym be
fore 7,200 fans to down the Tex
as Longhorns 87-81 and keep
their Southwest Conference hopes
alive.
A&M fought back after trail
ing 47-43 at the half to claim
their second league win against
one loss while the sputtering
Horns dropped to 1-2.
Texas started the game with a

there, the Steers took their big
gest lead of the half after a
steal by Mullin who passed to
Lynn Howden who layed it in
for a 12-7 Texas advantage. The
Aggies fought back to go ahead
finally at 24-22 but the lead be
gan to see-saw back and forth,
A&M finally piled up a lead of
their own twice, 33-28 and 35-30,
but some good shooting by the
Steers put them ahead by four
at the break.
But the second half was an al
together different story as the
Aggies suddenly began to take
charge and completely reverse
their performance at the free
throw line, a sore spot after last
Saturday’s loss to Baylor. The
hot-shooting Cadets capitalized
on 33 of 38 from the charity
stripe and that proved to be the
difference because Texas made
eight more shots from the field.
The Aggies proved that their
shooting was not confined to
free throws however as they
worked for the open shot time
after time and finished hitting
27 of 50 for a 54 per cent while
the Longhorns meshed 35 of 74
for 47.3 per cent.
The battle of the boards ulti
mately went to the Aggies but
not after Texas had led in that
category 19-15 after the first
twenty minutes. A suprise to
many, including the Longhorns,
came in the second half when
the Aggies came out in a zone
defense in an attempt to get a
few more rebounds than they had
in the first half. The strategy
paid off handsomely for the Ca
dets as Texas hit a cold shooting
streak mid-way through the last
half and A&M began their come
back.
Texas went ahead 56-49 after
the break but A&M bounced back
behind the fine play of Steve
Niles and Pat Kavanaugh to
whittle the lead to 56-55 with
13:53 left. Bill Cooksey gave A&M
the lead twice on two 25-foot
jumpers but the big break seemed
