ies Open Conference Play Tonight THE BATTALION Page 4 College Station, Texas Tuesday, January 6,1971 ♦ f By Richard Campbell The Texas Aggies’ basketball squad touched down here in Texas after their succesful holi day tournament schedule only long enough to refuel it seems because tonight they start play ing for real as they open the 1970 Southwest Conference race in Fayetteville against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The defending conference cham pions returned from the holiday wars in fine fashion as they nipped host Furman, 68-66, in the first round of the Poinsetta Classic in Greenville, S. C., then edged Northwestern of the Big Ten, 93-91, in overtime to earn the championship trophy. In the Sun Carnival tournament in El Paso earlier they lost to Missouri in the opening round but came back to take the third place trophy by defeating Clemson. Mike Heitmann, the 6-4 senior captain for A&M, set a tourna ment record wtih 37 points in the championship game in Greenville and was named the Most Valuable Player in the meet.
