A&M Awarded $22,300 For Ocean Studies Study of the origin of icy bot tom water in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean will be made by the University during 1969-70 through a $22,300 National Sci ence Foundation grant. Conducted in cooperation with Argentine scientists and govern ment agencies, the oceanographic research head at A&M by Dr. Luis R. A. Capurro will be con tinuing into its fourth year. “The work will be a continu ation of the International Weddell Sea Expedition in the Antarctic,” explained the four-year A&M faculty member. Next year’s study will center on physical oceanography of the Weddell Sea and collecting of data. The study seeks to deter mine of origin of the cold water masses comprising the polar Falkland current that sweeps northward off the east coast of South America. Previous work in the area also included study of the well-defined front between the warm Brazil current and polar current. Capurro, a former Argentine Navy captain, said U. S. and Argentine icebreakers will be em ployed for cruises into the heavily iced Weddell Sea. The NSF grant is administered by the A&M Research Foundation and brings the four-year total to $126,300. (AP Wirephoto) EngineersCon tract For Shell Research Texas Engineering Experiment Station has received a $15,000 contract from Sandia Corp. of Albuquerque, N. M., for continua tion of research in nonlinear sta tic and dynamic analysis of shells of revolution. The work covered by the San dia grant includes an evaluation of various numerical methods for obtaining solutions to nonlinear structural problems with respect to convergence characteristics, amount of computer time required and ease of application. Dr. James A. Stricklin, profes sor of aerospace engineering is principal investigator. He has conducted studies which have ap plication to the Apollo and future space vehicles sponsored by San dia and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration since 1967. “Considerable attention is need ed to determine which analysis technique is best suited for solv ing the nonlinear finite element problem,” Dr. Stricklin said. “Our work will compare and evaluate several methods of solv ing a single class of problems,” he added. Another objective of the re search is to propose and test methods of solving the nonlinear dynamic equation of equilibrium for possible incorporation into the computer code development by Texas A&M researchers. Stricklin received his doctorate from MIT in 1964 and has been at Texas A&M since 1965. He has been working on shells of revolu tion for the past seven years and is author of numerous technical articles on the subject. Working with Dr. Stricklin are Walter E. Haisler of Temple, doctoral student in aerospace en gineering, and Joe R. Tillerson of Celeste, master’s candidate in aerospace engineering.
