Clay May Return Against Joe Frazier In Tampa Bout
By Hubert Mizell
Associated Press Sports Writer
MIAMI (JP) — A Cassius Clay-
Joe Frazier heavyweight title
fight, bringing the undefeated
former champion back to the
ring, appeared Tuesday to be
headed for 48,000-seat Tampa
Stadium.
“It looks like Tampa is in,”
said Clay’s New York attorney,
Bob Arum. “I’m flying to Flori
da to work out the details.”
Meanwhile, a Miami promoter
who thought he had the bout
locked up, promised a “block
buster announcement, no matter
what they are claiming.”
Arum said Murry Woroner,
who is licensed to put on fights
only in the city of South Miami,
is no longer involved in the nego
tiations.
“Frazier’s attorney wired Wo-
roner’s lawyers Tuesday and said
terms proposed by him were not
acceptable and that talks were
eased,” Arum said.
Woroner, said his attorney re
ceived no such wire and said
Clay’s legal counsel refused to
answer or return his telephone
calls.
Gov. Claude Kirk jumped into
the ring and said, “I would like
to see it accomplished for the
state of Florida. He (Clay) lost
his title legally, not by fisti
cuffs.”
Tampa promoter Ron Gorton,
working in behalf of American
Leisure Corp., said he had con
tacted authorities regarding rent
ing Tampa Stadium and said ne
gotiations for closed-circuit tele
vision were well under way.
“I wish we had 100,000 seats,”
said Gorton, “because people will
come from everywhere to
this one.”
Arum said he speaks for Clay
and that “all seems in line for a
match in Tampa.”
Gorton said the Frazier-Clay
fight will be under the auspic ei |
of Tampa Boxing Enterprises, j
wholly-owner subsidiary of Amet.|
