Off The Record THE BATTALION Wednesday, December 3, 1969 College .Station, Texas Page 7 by Gary McDonald LED ZEPPELIN II— Led Zeppelin To put thi,s album in it’s proper perspective, keep in mind that lead guitarists, Jimmy Page and Led Zippelin, like Alvin Lee and Ten Years After, are business men. They are aware that the public, especially the American public, wants raucous, sensational music. They supply that demand. On those terms this album is out standing, because there are few, Hendrix is one, who excell them at that kind of music. Thus, what Cbe Battalion Has Openings For PHOTOGRAPHERS STAFF WRITERS AD SALESMEN Work Hours by Arrangement Students Should Contact Dave Mayes At 845-2226 after 7:30 p. m. we have here is a blatant attack on the senses. They use all the tricks and use them well, general ly wringing every last thrill out of the listened. Page, not known for playing economically, is the obvious focal point of the group. It all revolves around him. Most of the songs are built around one or more of his rhythmic bassy riffs that in cite joyous movement of the body. His strident solos are the epitomy of flash. It is his show and he doe)S it well. Though perhaps not quite as dazzling as Page, lead vocalist, Robert Plant makes his presence felt in a dramatic way. His voice is an elastic object capable of emitting almost as many different sounds as Page’s guitar. He moans, presses around, screams as if in ecstacy or violent pain, and contributes generously to the overall good time. "Whole Lotta Love” is the prime mover of the album and is particularly arresting when lis tening to on head phones, because of the imaginative use of stereo. A sequence from their live per formances and a direct steal from Howling Wolf’s "Killing Floor” gave birth to the "Lemon Song”, which contains one of Plant’s most desperate and effective vo cals. "Bring It On Home,” with blues growl and harp playing from Plant, is another of the outstanding cuts. It is a credit to Page’s pro duction ability that despite all the elements of the Led Zeppelin BATTALION CLASSIFIED DEADLINE 4 p.m. day before publication ANTED: Commercial Artist. Keeping in mind their own self- imposed limitations, this is an ex ceptionally good album. MOTHER EARTH PRESENTS TRACY NELSON COUNTRY— Mother Earth Although the title states that this is a new album by Mother Earth, it could be more accurately described as a solo album by Tracy Nelson. As one who just could not get enough of her on the two Mother Earth records, this comes as a slight disappoint ment. The important thing her voice, is still fine but the instru mental work is not as tight or imaginative as Mother Earth’s usual work. The music is unadulterated country, as opposed to a rock group’s interpretation of country. For instance, most of the songs are country classics such as “Stand By Your Man” and "I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Two exceptions, one written by ex- Steve Miller Band member, Boz Scaggs, and one co-written by Tracy Nelson and Bob Arthur, are competent, but not note-wor thy. In fact, that is the problem of the entire album. It is all competent, but is mediocre and pedestrian. Nothing really jells. There is little excitement.
