(Photo by Mike Wright) LeeRoy Yarbrough First To Enter TIS Texas 500 LeeRoy Yarbrough, Ford Mo tor Company’s “Motorsports Man of the Year”, is the first entry for the inaugural Texas 500 on December 7 at the new Texas International Speedway located 6 miles south of College Station. The 31 year old Yarbrough has signed to drive the Junior John son owned 1969 Ford in the $93,150 five hundred mile race at the 2 mile oval. The native of Jacksonville, Fla., who now resides with his wife and young son in Columbia, S.C., started the 1969 NASCAR Grand National season with a victory in the Daytona 500 in February, the day after he had won a 300 mile event for NASCAR sportsman division competitors. He followed the Daytona win with triumphs in the Darlington, S.C., 400 and the World 600 at Charlotte in May. Yarbrough’s diversity of rac ing talent came in May also when he qualified a car for the Indianapolis 500 and was running well in the race until mechanical troubles forced him to the side lines. In July, the curly-haired speedster scored his second vic tory at Daytona in the 400 miler and followed that in August with a win at Atlanta Raceway’s 500 mile chase. September brought the Junior Johnson entry with LeeRoy at the wheel to victory lane following the Southern 500 at Darlington. The seventh season win came in October at Rockingham, N.C., in yet another 500 mile race. Prior to Yarbrough’s fantastic 1969 season, the NASCAR Grand National record for super speed way victories and money was held by Mercury driver Cale Yar borough who won four events during the 1968 campaign and established a “dollar derby” rec ord of $136,786. Yarborough (no relation) is also expected to be a top contender in the Texas 500. LeeRoy Yarbrough recently drove in a series of tire tests at the new T.I.S. facility and was emphatic about his liking for the track’s smooth surface and the 22 degree banked turns. “This is a race driver’s race track,” said Yarbrough. “We will be able to really run and I won’t be sur prised to see an awful lot of three and four abreast battles for the lead even though we’ll be running 173 to 175 miles an hour. That is the wey we all like to race.” Tickets are available for the Texas 500 at the Texas Interna tional Speedway ticket office in the Ramada Inn, Highway 6 South, College Station, Texas 77840; and at ticket outlets throughout the state. The loss gave the Fish a 4-1 record, and it was the first loss for Fish Coach Jim Keller. Keller's charges had run up a nine game streak before Friday’s encounter. Yearling quarterback Gary Keithley accounted for most of the damage with a touchdown pass, a touchdown run and time ly end sweeps. The Fish offense put a lot of wear on Memorial Stadium's Astroturf between the 20’s, but was unable to find the scoring combination until late in the third quarter. The first Texas touchdown came just before the half as the Aggies were driving deep into Yearling territory. James hit May for 15 yard scoring toss, but the Fish were penalized 15 yards for clipping. The next play Lex James fumbled a pitchout and the Yearlings recovered on their 27 yard line. From there Keith ley took Texas the distance on five plays, the scoring playing being a 41 yard toss to Mike Janda. The Yearlings took the third quarter kickoff and drove 70 yards in 14 plays for their sec ond touchdown. The final Year ling score came with 2:18 left in the third quarter, as a result of a short Fish punt. Texas scored on the 41 yard drive in nine plays. Behind 21-0, the Fish took the kickoff and marched 80 yards in seven plays. James hit John Swedeen for a eight yard scoring play. McDermott’s extra point was wide and the Fish trailed 21 6. The Aggies threatened later in the fourth quarter. Ralph Sacra recovered Keithley’s fumble on the Aggie 45 yard line. James drove the Fish to the Yearling 17 yard line. On a fourth down try, a double handoff from James to Brad Dusek and back to James was tossed for a 10 yard loss and the ball went over on downs. The rest of the game the Fish were bottled up in their own end of the field. James accounted for 158 yards passing on 14 completions in 27 attempts and tacked on 31 yards rushing on 20 attempts. Vance Kerbow led all rushers with 63 yards on 11 carries. Swedeen led Aggie receivers with seven catches for 86 yards and one touchdown. Tommy Goodwin caught five for 65 yards,! p May was credited with tat seven yards. VETERAN COACHES CHICAGO _ Woody Hayes at Ohio State is the dean of the Big Ten football coaches.
