Ross Brupbacher snares a sideline pass for 17 yards and an important first down in the Aggie’s first touchdown drive. Seven plays later Brupbacher caught a 28 yard touchdown toss behind the SMU defenders deep in the endzone. Brupbacher’s crushing blocks also enabled Steve Burks to pick up yardage during the game. When the Alabama team arriv ed in Baton Rouge Friday night, a group of pretty girls met the bus and one climbed aboard and planted a big kiss on Coach Bear Bryant’s cheek. Bryant turned to his players and introduced the young lady. “Boys,” he said, “I’d like you to meet Miss Dorothy McLendon. She’s Coach Mac’s daughter.” Later, Dorothy told her father, “Daddy, I put the kiss of death on Coach Bryant.” Saturday night, after a 20-15 victory, McLendon commented, “I might just have ‘Dee’ kiss all the visiting coaches from now Coach Dan Devine of Missouri calls Oklahoma quarterback Jack Mildren “probably the best soph omore ever to come into the Big Eight.” So Saturday, Devine sent senior Terry McMillan, who was only a third-stringer at Coral Gables, Fla., High School, out to do battle with the highly recruit ed Mildren. All McMillan did was complete 17 of 37 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns as Missouri roped 44-10. How hard was McMillan re cruited ? “One of his high school coach es got him a shot at Missouri Southern Junior College,” De- vine explained. “Missouri South ern was coached by one of our former quarterbacks, who recom mended him to us.” Speaking of the Big Eight, did you know that Devine is the dean of conference coaches at age 44. Floyd Gass of Oklahoma State is a Big Eight rookie, Iowa State’s Johnny Majors is in his second season, while Chuck Fairbanks, Vinct Gibson and Pepper Rodg ers are in their third years at Oklahoma, Kansas State and Kansas, respectively. The other veterans are Bob Devaney, who arrived at Nebras ka in 1962, and Eddie Crowder, who came to Colorado a year later. “The guys who left didn’t leave of their own accord,” Devine said. “They weren’t planning on leaving.” And, observing that the new comers are transforming weak sisters into powerhouses, Devine added: “Each new coach asks his ad ministration for more help here, more help there. It seems like the only way to get a change is to fire the coach. But since I’m also an athletic director, I’m against firing any football coaches.” If a father-son relationship was ever a candidate for strained feelings, it was Saturday when Wake Forest edged Virginia 23- 21. Center John Blackburn, son of the Virginia coach, snapped a ball that sailed over the punter’s head and was kicked through the end zone for the safety that gave Wake Forest the triumph. Ironically, a bad snap by first- stringer Denny Ryczek had en abled the Dacons to pull even at 21-all. It was almost like an instant replay. Ernie Jennings, Air Force flanker, got behind Utah State’s Dennis Ferguson in the end zone . . . and dropped a per fect pass from Gary Baxter. On the next play, Jennings got be hind Ferguson again . . . and held on for the first of his five touch down grabs. Read Battalion Classifieds For all your insurance needs See U. M.
