LOUIS 6P>—The St. Louis Cardinals acquired a .348 hitter Tuesday—Carl Taylor from Pitts burgh—in another step toward remedying a major weakness of the Cards’ poor 1969 season, in ability to get baserunners across home plate. The 25-year-old right-handed hitting Taylor can catch, play first base or the outfield. And manager Red Schoendienst said he doesn’t know yet where he will use him. But it was Taylor’s bat, anyway, that prompted gen eral manager Bing Devine to send pitcher Dave Guisti and reserve catcher Dave Ricketts to the Pirates for Taylor and a minor league player. The Cardinals produced fewer runs in 1969 than any of the Na tional League teams except the expansion clubs, Montreal and San Diego. And there were 18 games they could have won and didn’t with a hit or even a long fly ball, when they had a runner on third with less than two men out. The inability to get the clutch hit was the factor which saw the Cards fall to fourth in the East ern Division rather than win their third straight pennant as they were heavily favored to do. Two weeks ago, the Cards made their first trade of the off-season, getting power hitter Richie Al len from Philadelphia in a seven- player deal which sent catcher Tim McCarver and outfielder Curt Flood to the Phillies, assum ing Flood has second thoughts about retiring. Schoendienst, off on a hunting trip, told Cardinal headquarters he would have to evaluate Taylor in spring training to determine where the new acquisition would be played. But he has several options. Schoendienst said after the trade for Allen he planned to use him in left field, with Lou Brock shifting to right and Vada Pinson from right to center. Allen has a weak arm, however, because of an injury, and there has been some concern whether he will be able to throw well enough to play the outfield. If Allen is shifted to first base, perhaps young Joe Hague, tenta tively slated for first base, and Taylor would share outfield duty. Taylor gives the Cards a third catcher, too. Joe Torre and young Ted Simmons are the others. Right now Torre is the No. 1 catcher, but he has agreed to go to Florida soon for work in the Instructional League to see how he can perform at third base, a position he hasn’t played since high school. Guisti, a 30-year -old right hander, was disabled part of the season with a back injujy worked only 100 innings. ; jjj Rich) three and lost seven and hatl^ oac ^ 3.60 earned run average, ~ The 34-year-old Ricketts the Cards’ third-string C a| and hit .275 in 44 at bats, mi in pinchhit roles.
