Dr. B. V. Gustafson is a unique instructor for Aggies. The 24- year-old’s first name is Bonnie and she’s a lady vet—the only woman on the vet medicine pro fessional staff. “It doesn’t bother me at all,” the comely doctor admits. “I don’t know how they (the male vets) feel about it, but it’s really a lot easier to work around a group of guys.” Dr. Gustafson, who is single, grew up outside Mound, Minn., on a six-acre farm “just big enough for kids, weeds and horses.” Her mother, Mrs. Crawford Gustafson of Wayzata, is a speech therapeutist for the Orono School District. Dr. Gustafson graduated from Mound High School and headed straight for the University of Minnesota with a life-long ambi tion to become a doctor of veter inary medicine. She received a B.S. degree in veterinary medicine in 1966 and the D.V.M. degree in 1968, both from Minnesota. During her college days she purchased “Lady’s Stubby,” a gelding Palomino Quarter Horse that is No. 1 in his class in Min nesota and one of the top in the nation. A desire to make Lady’s Stub by the top horse in the nation led Dr. Gustafson to Texas A&M. She likes A&M’s location, as it makes it easier to travel to many of the horse shows during a year. Total points are the name of the game in horse shows. The horse with the most points takes the honors. Last year, Dr. Gustafson crank ed up her Chrysler and pulled the Palomino to almost 30 shows in seven states. “Texas has more shows and it’s closer to many of the big shows,” she relates. Texas A&M’s vet school also offers Dr. Gustafson an oppor tunity to work on a master’s de gree in veterinary surgery and medicine. “I enjoy college teaching and want to stay in it,” she said. She will start teaching comparative cow and horse anatomy the next tri-mester and will teach clinical anatomy next summer. Dr. Gustafson was an instruc tor in the Department of Veter inary Medical Surgery and Radi ology at the University of Min nesota last year. She was one of three women on the professional staff at Minnesota. Texas A&M has graduated a number of lady vets and currently has 23 enrolled in the professional college, including 12 first year girls. A&M was an all-male uni versity until 1964. Dr. Gustafson pointed out that many of the students she will be teaching are older than she is. There were from three to six girls in each class at Minnesota, where the veterinary college is about half the size of A&M’s 383 enrollment. Dr. Gustafson was in the na tional spotlight in 1967 when she attempted to pull a rock from an elephant’s throat. “An elephant from the Como Park Zoo got a rock caught in its throat. I have a small hand and slim arm, so I went down after the rock. I got my hand around it, but couldn’t pull it out.” The story and pictures Went throughout the nation. The throat muscles had con tracted and efforts to extract the rock failed. The young elephant died from shock and not being able to eat. Dr. Gustafson arrived in Col lege Station last week and al ready has hopes of showing her horse at the Texas State Fair. Her application is still being con sidered in Dallas. She is a member of the Ameri can Veterinary Medical Associa tion, Women’s Veterinary Medical Association and Minnesota Equine Practitioner’s Association. She is also a national director and inspector for the Palomino Horse Breeders of America. (Continued from page I) three parking lots and we put up signs showing the parking lot number and the corresponding permit color on all the lots,” Powell said. “This will help stu dents, particularly freshmen, find the lots that they can park in.” Parking Saturated Chief Powell said that future plans for parking at A&M will eventually include elevated and underground parking. “For this type of parking we aren’t speaking of $10 permits,” he said. “We are speaking of $150 to $300 per year parking per mits.” “The Texas Transportation In stitute has several ideas for solv ing the parking problems on cam pus,” the chief said. “The most feasible one for A&M would be to put large lots on the outer fringes of the campus and have a bus pick up the students.” LADY VET AND FRIEND Dr. Bonnie V. Gustafson and her show horse “Lady’s Stub by” have found a new home here at the university. Dr. Gustafson, 24, is the only woman instructor in the College of Veterinary Medicine. She and the Palomino Quarter Horse are natives of Minnesota. LOOKING FOR A HOME J\e\son Sflobile J4omes, 3nc. 811 Texas Ave. 846-9135 College Station The Church..For a Fuller life..For You..
