HOUSTON — Nude photos
of two members of the Rice Uni
versity June graduating class will
appear in the school’s yearbook,
slated to make a delayed appear
ance next week.
The pictures of Marilyn Pene
lope Johnson and Ennis Rex
Bahler, both 22, and both voted
outstanding students, will appear
in the “Campanile.” The year
book’s publication was delayed
by insistence of the publisher on
guarantees against liability of
invasion of privacy.
Conrad I. Boeck, co-editor of
the publication, said to describe
the two as nudes “is not quite
accurate.”
“The girl does have her picture
taken without her clothes but the
boy has his taken with his
clothes,” Boeck said. “However,
there is an inset picture of the
boy without his clothes.”
“Penny thought she had only
herself to give as outstanding
girl student,” Boeck added.
“There is no gimmick involved.
She did not want it. The empha
sis is away from everything but
the human side.”
Boeck also said there is “defi
nite artistic value” to the presen
tation.
“P e n n y, herself, suggested
that she appear in the nude,” he
said.
Reached at Buffalo, N. Y.,
where she is now a graduate stu
dent seeking a doctor’s degree in
English at State University of
New York, Miss Johnson told the
Houston Chronicle by telephone
“I did it for Rice and the Rice
community.”
“But I don’t want to talk to
the Chronicle about it because
that puts it in the class of a
publicity stunt and that’s not
why I did it,” she said.
Boeck said the yearbook had
obtained signed releases from
both Miss Johnson and Bahler
and that the student senate at
Rice had “voted to underwrite
the discretion of the editors
without looking at the material.”
Dr. Frank Vandiver, acting
Rice president, said while he did
ttani
not approve of what the editeCoacl
of the yearbook are publishing 5; Cac
will defend staunchly their rig|t pi
to publish it.” |r la:
“The student senate receinkerei
editorial control over Camparjiite’s
several years ago and with thiB
control goes responsibility lifi
taste and judgment,” Vandiv|
said.
