Stallings Looks Ahead To ‘Awesome’ Cornhuskers
By Richard Campbell
Battalion Sports Editor
“They’re probably licking’ their
chops, waiting to get a chance
to play us.”
Coach Gene Stallings was com
menting on the physical size of
the Nebraska squad at his week
ly press conference Tuesday in
the Lettermen’s Lounge in G.
Rollie White. He said that the
sellout crowd in Lincoln, Neb.,
Saturday could be compared to
the throngs that jammed the
Roman Coliseum to see the lions
eat the Christians.
“Nebraska is big,” Stallings
said. “Many of them weigh 240
(pounds) or more.”
Actually, the Cornhusker de
fensive line is monstrous with
readings like 242, 250, 212, 240,
and 235. Their defense will prob
ably be their strongest point with
10 starters back from a 6-4 unit.
Coach Bob Devaney is the win-
ningest coach in the nation and
has a winning .500 percentage in
each of the last seven years.
In evaluating the play of the
Aggies in the LSU game Stallings
said that “LSU was a little better
than I had thought they would
be, but we also played a little
worse than I thought we would.”
“Their defense was good, es
pecially their linebackexs (George
Bevan and Mike Anderson, both
all-America candidates),” Stal
lings continued.
“Our offensive line didn’t block
as well as I had expected them
to. They put a lot of effort into
it but sometimes they just blocked
the wrong man and there was
some indecision at times.”
Several players were singled
out by Stallings for fine per
formances against the Tigers and
he broke them down by positions.
In the baekfield, quarterback
Jimmy Sheffield received praise
and Stallings said both fullback
Marc Black and tailback Steve
Burks blocked well at times. Re
ceivers Jimmy Adams, Billy Joe
Polasek, and Barney Harris were
also mentioned by Stallings as
being “pretty good receivers.”
“The offensive line composed
of Forey (Leonard), Philley (An
dy), Parker (Jim), and Davis
(Robin) didn’t block as well as
we had expected across the line,”
Stallings said, “but they gave
good effort.”
“Our defense gave up a lot of
points,” he continued, “but I think
that they are going to be alright.
DeNiro (linebacker Mike) did a
fine job. He hit people pretty well
and was all over the field.”
The Odom brothers, Lynn and
Van, were also singled out for
their play, along with defensive
halfbacks Edwin Ebrom and Dave
Elmendorf.
The team came out of the tra
ditionally rough game with only
a smattering of injuries. Mike
Caswell, Forey, Polasek, Van
Odom, and Barney Harris are all
out because of certain minor ail
ments but will be ready Saturday,
Del Insko, with 99 winners dur
ing the Yonkers, N. Y., winter and
spring harness racing meet, led
drivers in money won with
$475,922.
