THE BATTALION
Without Riot Rider
Student Loan Bill Passes To Senate
When Buck Burnside came to
the part of his A&M application
calling for names of relatives
who had previously attended the
university, the Yankee freshman
scribbled “see attached sheet.”
The attached sheet listed 14
persons, including Burnside’s
grandfather, mother, six uncles,
two aunts and four cousins—all
from his mother’s side of the
family.
“I was pulling them from
everywhere, hoping it would help
me get in, since I was from out
of state,” explained the 18-year-
old Livingston, N, J., youth.
The name which appeared so
frequently on the Texas A&M
rolls was Mueller. It all began
when Burnside’s grandfather, the
late Henry Mueller, enrolled
about the turn of the century.
Firm believers in a Texas A&M
education, Burnside’s grandpar
ents at one time had so many
children attending the institution
that they simply moved here un
til everyone completed school.
Usually it is the father who
has attended a particular insti
tution and urges his son to carry
on the tradition. In Burnside’s
case, it is his mother, who attend
ed Texas Woman’s University
regularly but was a summer stu
dent at A&M. (Prior to 1963,
women could attend A&M only
during the summer.)
CS Man Injured
In Car Accident
Two cars collided at Farm Road
2154 and Jersey Street Monday,
slightly injuring a College Sta
tion man.
Suffering a cut on the head was
Dale Lee Henry of 1212 Caudill.
Eunice T. Snodgrass of Brenham,
driver of the other car, was un
injured.
College Station Police Chief
Melvin Luedke estimated the
Henry car sustained $450 in dam
ages th;e Snodgrass car, $75.
Burnside noted that his father,
Army Col. Glenn G. Burnside, is
“almost as excited about me at
tending A&M as I am.”
“He said if he’d known about
A&M at the time he was going
to college, he would have come
here,” said the younger Burnside.
His father, a native New Yorker,
attended a northern school.
Burnside, who will major in
forestry, made his first visit to
the campus last fall. He liked
what he saw.
“I applied at other schools,”
he remarked, “but Texas A&M
was my choice.” Eager to get
started, he attended A&M’s camp-
type summer school at Junction
as a warm-up for fall classes
which began Monday.
Burnside elected to participate
in the Corps of Cadets.
“It’s going to be tough, but I
figure the Corps will help me
quite a bit,” he observed. He
cited the discipline factor, which
he believes will help him in his
studies.

WASHINGTON (A>)_The stu
dent loan bill—without provision
for dealing with campus rioters—
is on its way to the Senate after
passing 322 to 60 in the House.
In the Senate, the measure—
which attempts to make loans to
needy students readily available
through government - guaranteed
interest subsidies—either can be
passed in its present form or
sent to a conference committee.
The House defeated an attempt
to write in antiriot provisions.
Another version, passed earlier
by the Senate, was rejected by
the House just before Congress
took its three-week summer re-
This left many students who
planned to resume college this
fall with the help of a loan hold
ing the bag. President Nixon,
however, appealed to banks to
grant the student loans anyhow,
on the strength of the bill’s
passage when Congress returned.
Under either measure, private
banks would grant loans to stu
dents and the government would
pay the interest until the student
completed his schooling.
The government also guaran
teed repayment if the student’s
family has an income of less than
$15,000.
While the legal interest ceiling
on such loans would remain at
7 per cent, the measure provides
for interest subsidies of up to 3
per cent to the banks.
