But it wasn’t Hargett’s passing prow ess which most impressed the Houston junior. “Edd was a great passer al right,” Sheffield says, “but his leadership was the thing that im pressed me. Edd took charge on the field, and the players did what he said.” Sheffield wants to become tech nically proficient, of course, but his main goal now is taking com mand of the offense. If comments from fellow players are any guide, the 6-0, 180- pounder is reaching 50 Fish Report For Football Fifty Texas A&M freshman footballers reported for opening workouts Monday (Sept. 8), ac cording to freshman coach Jim Keller. Keller said the Fish team work ed in shorts for a week before starting contact work Sept. 15. The Fish open the season Oct. 2 in Kyle Field against the TCU Wogs. This year’s highly-regarded re cruits will be shooting for a sec ond consecutive undefeated cam paign. The 1968 Fish team posted a 5-0 record, the first in the school’s records. The 1969 Fish are: Jimmy Ay- cock, Fort Worth; Boice Best, Houston; Bruce Best, Houston; Max Bird, Amarillo; Thomas Burk, Houston; Buster Calloway, Ennis; Dennis Carruth, Dallas; Garland Childers, Odessa; Todd Christopher, Beaumont; Mike Coy, Boys Ranch; Brooks Dough- tie, Pasadena; Brad Dusek, Tem ple; and! Mike Faulkner, Victoria. Andy Ferguson, Houston; Kent Finley, Abilene; Robert Gerasi- mowicz, Dickinson; Tommy Good win, Fort Worth; Gregg Hall, Houston; Roy Heifrin, Lancaster; Garry Lynn Davis, Paris; Mar shall Herklotz, Lexington; Grady Hoermann, Seguin; Eddie Hooper, Olton; Michael Ray Dorough, Paris; Lex James, Houston; Butch Kamps, Bellaire; Vance Kerbow, Corpus Christi; and Steve Kirk, Omaha-Naples. Also Bryan Lewis, Sweetwater; Mike Marshall, Odessa; Gary Martin, Houston; Herman Mauch, El Campo; Homer May, Lubbock; Gary McCaffrey, San Antonio; Dave McKee, League City; Glenn McNatt, Graham; Ted Medanich, Pecos; Mike Mercer, Temple; Robert Merski, Houston; Ray mond Peak, Fort Worth; Dan Peo ples, Odessa; John Lee Pigg, Center; Fred Placke, Houston; Marc Poss, Homer, La.; Robert Price, Paris; Ralph Sacra, Hous ton; Jerry Sherman, Abilene; John Swedeen, Amarillo; Gary Whitehead, Holliday; Travis Wright, Odessa. that target. “Sheffield takes control,” says senior center Jack Kovar. “I was on the other side in the spring game, but in the last couple of days before the end of spring training he really took over and we all knew that Jimmy was go ing to be the quarterback.” “He’s sure of himself,” senior tight end Ross Brupbacher says. “He can run and he can throw and he believes he can score. We think a lot of Hargett here, but I have as much respect for Jim my. If he does anything better than Edd it is run.” “Sheffield’s not a bad quarter back,” coach Gene Stallings com ments. “I think he is going to be a better quarterback than a lot of people think.” The Houston Waltrip product is one of a host of Aggies from the Gulf Coast area, another fac tor which worked in Sheffield’s favor. “Jimmy Adams and Tommy Sooy lived near me this summer so I got a lot of practice throw ing to them,” Sheffield said. Adams and Sooy are split ends for the Aggies. Though Sheffield is a junior letterman, his monogram does not denote any quarterback experi ence. In fact, he has not had any game experience at the man- under slot since high school. He was ineligible his freshman year at A&M, then lettered at tailback as a sophomore when Larry Ste- gent was injured. The year at tailback gave a good indication of Sheffield’s run ning ability, a talent which A&M’s offense hasn’t had for several year. Jimmy came off the bench to post a 63-yard run against Texas Tech last year, and he gained 129 yards in his first full game at tailback. Sheffield’s talent carrying the ball is also a tipoff that the Ag gies won’t be throwing the ball 37 times a game as they did last year. “We’ll have a more bal anced offense,” says Stallings. “The only thing that concerns me about Sheffield is that he has not been tested in a game,” Stall ings says. “It takes a quarterback a little while to get accustomed to playing in front of a lot of people.” The first test will come Sept. 20 when the Aggies open against LSU in Baton Rouge. That one game in front of 68,000 scream ing fans should be test enough.
