Ask An Upper Classman - Or An Aggie-Ex - He’ll Tell You About LOUPOTS North Gate Page 6 College Station, Texas Wednesday, September 10, 1969 THE BATTALION !HI Spring Sports On The Move The spring of the year should bring more to Aggieland in 1970 than just spring fever. The spring looks like it could bring a conference champ in any of the spring sports but after last season it seems as though 1969 may be the year of the cin- derman for the Aggies. With a little added depth on the squad, the Aggie track team could well challenge Texas and Rice for the SWC crown next year. Bolstered by strong per formances from sophomores Cur tis Mills and Rockie Woods, A&M enjoyed a third place finish in the 1969 SWC meet in Waco in May. Woods, a high jumper-turned- sprinter, was the 100-yard dash champ with a time of 9.4 and if last year is any indication, he has speed to burn. His running mate, Mills, is the current world’s rec ord holder in the 440-yard dash after defeating Lee Evans in the NCAA meet in June. Both Mills and Woods are important cogs in the relay events for the ‘fast’ Aggies. The 1969 edition of Aggie base- ballers hope to improve on their disappointing fourth place finish in the conference race. The 1970 Cadets will be paced by junior pitcher Doug Rau and All-SWC outfielder (and footballer) Dave Elmendorf. If the Aggies are going to gather all of the mar bles then they will have to deal harshly with the Texas Long horns, 1969 champs, because they will again be favored. The 1969 SWC golf champs will try to repeat their perform ance of last year with three of four of their top players return- , ing. Only Bill Wade graduated | from the foursome of Duke But ler, Reggie Majors, and Richard Ellis. The swimming team will again field a strong conference con tender but should finish no high er than third or fourth because of the superiority of both SMU and Texas Tech. A&M with many lettermen returning, should bet ter their fifth place SWC finish last year. Tennis is definitely on the up swing at Aggieland and a strong nucleus returns from a 21-15 squad. Jon Ragland, half of the SWC champion doubles team, re turns to captain the team with help also expected from Mike Hickey, a junior letterman.
