The newest addition to the staff is Bobby Marks hired earli er this year from Sam Houston high school in Houston where he was head coach. He will be in charge of coaching the lineback ers and will also do scouting and recruiting. Jim Keller, last year’s fresh man coach, returns for his sec ond season after guiding the 1968 fish to an undefeated year. This will open Stallings’ fifth campaign at the Aggies helm and his second as Athletic Director. A CAPTAIN of the undefeated 1956 Aggie team, Stallings spent seven seasons as an assistant to Bryant at Alabama. He returned here late in 1964, and in 1965 his team won three games, including a 14-10 upset of Georgia Tech. Born in 1935 at Paris, Texas, Stallings became an all-around sports star at Paris High School, where he captained football, bas ketball and golf teams. He let tered all three years at A&M in football and was all-conference his junior year. ELMER SMITH, assistant head coach, approaches his 16th season on the Aggie Staff. He came here in March 1954 from a head coach ing job at Southern State College in Magnolia, Ark. He is chief assistant to Stallings, and re cruits players in Northeast Tex. A native of Casa, Ark., Smith will observe his 62nd birthday a week before the season opener against LSU. He is a 1931 grad uate of Hendrix College and holds a master’s degree in physical education from Peabody in Nash ville, Tenn. As coach at Southern State from 1946-54, Smith posted a 57-27 record with perfect sea sons in 1951 and 1952. DEFENSIVE Coach Dee Pow ell joined the staff in January 1965, coming here from Alabama, where he was an assistant coach. His duties include overall defense, scouting and recruiting in the Houston area. Powell was born in Lockhart in 1935 and was graduated from Lockhard High School in 1952 after playing guard for two years. He was guard and center on the 1954-55-56 Aggie teams. He worked with Alabama’s de fense in 1963 and with the of fense in 1964. Offensive Coach Bud Moore left his job as assistant coach at Kentucky in January, 1965, to join Stallings’ staff. He was of fensive line coach that fall and became coach of the overall of fense last year. In addition to coaching and scouting duties, Moore recruits players in South Central Texas. MOORE PLAYED football, bas ketball, baseball and track at West End High School of Bir mingham, Ala. At the University of Alabama, he played football and baseball three years. Before joining the Kentucky coaching staff in 1962, he coached the Gadsden, Ala., high school team. Loyd Taylor, offensive back- field coach, came to A&M in ear ly 1965 from Oklahoma State University, where he was an as sistant coach. He is responsible for training offensive backs, ex cept quarterbacks, and split ends. He also is a scout, and recruits players in North Central Texas. Born in Roswell, N. M., in 1936, Taylor was an all-state halfback at Roswell High School. He was a halfback and place kicker three seasons at A&M. After gradua tion, Taylor became an assistant coach at Eagle Pass and then at Karnes City. LINEBACKERS Coach Don Watson was an assistant coach at South Carolina before joining Stallings in December 1964. His duties also include recruiting in Houston. A McAllen native, Watson played football, basketball and track at Franklin High School in Franklin, and was named to the All-State team as a halfback. At A&M, Watson won national Back-of-the-Week honors at half back and played in the 1956 Blue- Gray All-Star Game. He is 34 years old. Jack H u r 1 b u t, quarterback coach, has been with the staff since December 1964. In addition to coaching quarterbacks, Hurl- but recruits in Southeast Texas. BORN IN Houston in 1941, Hurlbut was graduated from Al- dine High School in 1959 after playing football, basketball, base ball and track. He was a quarter back and defensive halfback for the University of Alabama for three years. After graduation in 1964, he coached at Galveston’s Ball High School. Ralph Smith, end coach, came back to A&M in December, 1964, from an assistant coaching job at Odessa High School. He works primarily with defensive ends, and recruits in East Texas. A native of Borger, Smith played end three seasons at Phil lips High School in Borger. After graduating in 1957, he played on Aggie teams in 1958-59-60. HELMS, WHO will continue to coordinate recruiting in his as sistant varsity coach position, has been here since August 1965. He came to A&M from Uvalde, where he was head high school coach. Bom in San Augustine, Helms played high school football at Childress, where he was an All- State end. He played three years at end for Texas A&I. He earned a master’s degree in physical edu cation there, and has served as line coach at Brownsville Junior College and head coach at high schools in Freer, Laredo, San Benito and Uvalde. The youngest member of the staff is Lide Huggins, a defensive backfield coach and the recruiter for West Texas. He came to A&M in August 1965 as a stu dent assistant. BORN IN Mullins, S. C., the 25-year-old Huggins played quar terback and halfback for Mullins High School. He was a safety at South Carolina for three years, This is his first coaching assign- ment. Keller joined the staff in June after serving as student coach one season. He was born in At lanta, Texas, and played quarter back in football, forward in bas ketball and ran the quarter mile in track at Terrell High School, He was All-State two years in football and one year in basket ball. At Texas A&M he played quarterback-safety three years and forward two years. Trainer Billy Pickard, a San Antonio native and a 1956 A&M graduate, approaches his fourth season here. He had been trainer more than seven years at Brazos- port High School and one year at Port Arthur High School.
