Merrifield is the head of the new Department of Forest Science. DR. MERRIFIELD The announcement was made by Dr. H. O. Kunkel, dean of the A&M College of Agriculture, after budgetary plans for estab lishing the new department were approved during a meeting of the A&M System Board of Directors here Wednesday. Forest Science Department op erations will start at the begin ning of the fall semester and will offer bachelor and master de grees in addition to the existing PhD program, Kunkel said. The degree plans were approved last month by the Texas Coordinating Board for Colleges and Universi ties. The dean said the new depart ment is in the School of Natural Biosciences along with the De partments of Range Science, Wildlife Science and Recreation and Parks. Merrifield came to A&M in 1967 from the Louisiana State University Agricultural Experi ment Station, where his research focused on forest stand establish ment in old fields and stand re generation in existing forests. His primary research interests deal with intensive culture of hardwoods and growth and yield of pine plantations. Police are still searching for clues as to the whereabouts of the bank robber who made off with $11,805 Tuesday afternoon by threatening to explode a bomb at an outdoor teller’s window of the First Bank & Trust of Bryan. Shortly after the robbery, po lice discovered the bandit’s car abandoned two miles away. It had been reported stolen. Beverly Speakman, the teller at the drive-in window of the bank, told police the robber cov ered his fingers and face with adhesive tape. Henry B. Clay, president of the bank, said “The man drove up to the window, and when she slid out the tray, he put a satchel on it. It had a note on it that said the package was a bomb and he would set it off if she didn’t put money in the bag. LOUPOT'S North Gate Runkles Appointed Director ® Of A&M’s Water Resources Dr. Jack R. Runkles, a profes sor of soil physics, has been nam ed director of the Texas A&M Water Resources Institute, Dr. H. O. Kunkel, dean of the A&M College of Agriculture, announced Wednesday. The Water Resources Institue coordinates the total research ac tivities in water science at the university. Studies are made on water use, conservation and pol lution problems. Kunkel said Runkles was made acting director of the Water Re sources Institute almost a year ago. The professor joined the A&M Soil and Crop Sciences Depart ment in 1964, coming here from South Dakota State College. He received his doctoral degree in 1956 from Iowa State University. Runkles’ special research field has been soil and plant water re lationships. He is a former student of Texas A&M and received his BS degrtt in agronomy in 1950 and his MS degree in 1952. ffhiti scrim "Hold [he I lr, Tickets to First 3 A&M Caines On Sale at G. Rollie White Children’s Dramatics Registration Sept. 22 Athletic Business Manager Wally Groff has announced that A&M students can start buying tickets for A&M’s first three football games next Monday merely by showing their I.D. cards. Groff added that student ac tivity cards, which will be need ed to obtain tickets for the last seven games, will be issued on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 18 and 19. Tickets for the LSU, Nebraska and Army games will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, starting next Monday. They’ll be on sale at ticket window No. 8 in G. Rollie White Coliseum. I.D. cards will be necessary to make purchases and a student will be limited to one ticket for himself and one for his date. Then, on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 18 and 19, student activity cards will be issued at windows 5 and 6 at the coliseum. The cards will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis but will denote scholastic classification for fu ture issuance of football tickets. Registration for fail semesUt children’s creative dramatics at Texas A&M will be conducted Sept. 20, announced C. K. Esten. The A&M theater arts section director said any child age six to 12 years is eligible to participate in the program, which will run concurrent with the semester. Children in the program select their own plays, decide dramatic possibilities of each, plan and act them with spontaneous dialogue and action, Esten said. Sessions will be on Saturday mornings in the Fallout Theater of Guion Hall. Esten said 8 a.m. to 12 noon registration also will be in the Fallout Theater.
