Astros Host Expos In ‘Biggest Home Stand’
There will be special added
attractions for each of the Hous
ton Astros games with Rusty
Staub and the Montreal Expos
this weekend in the Astrodome in
the annual “Louisiana Days” cele
bration.
Friday night, August 8, will be
“Be a Manager Night” when all
youngsters will receive free the
new baseball game called “Be A
Manager.”
A1 Hirt, the famous trumpet
player from New Orleans, will
present a pre-game concert start
ing at 6:45 p.m. Saturday night,
August 9. The show is included
in the price of the baseball ticket.
Sunday’s 2:00 p.m. game will
be preceded by a college all-star
game. Some of the leading col
legiate baseball players in the
country, who have been perform
ing in the College Invitational
League, will play a five-inning
exhibition game, starting at 12:30

For ‘Winter’ School
Most students at Texas A&M
are attending summer school, but
one is here for “winter school.”
Angelica Ambrogi of Sao
Paulo, Brazil, left her native
country in June to start the
eight-week National Science
Foundation Summer Institute in
Chemistry. June, July and Aug
ust are winter months in Brazil.
Miss Ambrogi is a chemistry
teacher at Coligio Estadual de
Sao Paulo, a public high school,
and also a member of the Teach
er Training Center, University
of Sao Paulo.
She is attending Texas A&M
under a NSF grant to learn the
CHEM-Study method of chem
istry teaching. CHEM-Study is
the coined name for the chemi
cal material study program
started 10 years ago in Califor
nia, according to her teacher and
institute director, Dr. Fred Si-
cilio.
Although Miss Ambrogi has
traveled in other American coun
tries, this is her first visit to
North America.
She finds the United States
very interesting.
“I understand the professors
because they are talking the
chemistry language,” she said.
“But I have trouble understand
ing outside conversations.” Miss
Ambrogi said her English has
improved, however, and she finds
it easier to understand almost
every day.
She taught herself the CHEM-
Study method and has been one
of the teacher trainers respon
sible for teaching other Brazilian
teachers the new method.
“In comparing what we do at
the training center, I find we are
working with the same course
that is being taught here,” she
stated.
Public school education in
Brazil is different than in Amer
ica.
She pointed out that Brazilian
students receive three years of
chemistry, physics and math in
high school. She said it cannot
be compared to United States
training because most of Brazil’s
teenagers must have this concen
trated study in absence of col
lege training.
“The Brazil school year is
from August to December and
March to June,” she explained.
Educational programs are being
improved in the country and
emphasis is being placed in pro
viding more education.
Sao Paulo is 40 miles from the
Atlantic coast and has a popula
tion of six million people, she
noted.
A&M’s training is very impor
tant to her.

tures,” she said. “When I re
turn home I will have much to
tell, and much to study, too.”
Miss Ambrogi said the build
ings are no different than she
saw on television and in publi
cations.
But the “model of the Ameri
can people is different.”
“I was not sure if I would
like Americans,” she confessed.
“But now I must admit I find
Americans very pleasant.”
“A&M has a lot to be proud
of,” she declared. “I am enjoy
ing myself.”
Miss Ambrogi has visited
NASA, Houston and Dallas. Her
friends back home are excited
because she is in the United
States when man has blasted off
and headed for the first man
landing on the Moon.
“This is the most exciting time
of my life,” she related.
