Flies His Way Through School
Jimmie Savage is flying his
way through graduate school at
Texas A&M.
The 24-year-old candidate for
a master’s degree in aerospace
engineering is a pilot for a re
search project in which the uni
versity is studying subsonic flight
dynamics under a Project Themis
grant from the Department of
Defense.
About three times each week,
Savage climbs into a vintage fly
ing machine at the Texas A&M
Research Annex (formerly Bryan
Air Force Base) and takes off in
search of “discreet gusts.’’
Discreet gusts, explains the
Sudan, Texas, native, provide
sharp encounters but nothing bor
dering on clear-air turbulence.
Texas A&M officials hope, how
ever, the research will lead to
a better understanding of the
clear-air turbulence phenomenon.
None of the airplanes which
Savage tools around will ever be
mistaken for a corporate jet. The
fleet includes a modified Grum
man Ag-Cat, a Piper PA-18, T-34
trainer and a C-45. Savage and
associates are still “de-mothball-
ing” the C-45 after obtaining it
through government surplus two
months ago.
The planes have an average
age of 16 years, but the 1968
Texas A&M graduate emphasizes
they get the job done. Officially
designated experimental aircraft,
they are equipped with various
sensing devices for a variety of
air-borne tests.
While he spends much time up
in the air, Savage has a down-to-
earth outlook about his work and
future. Whereas most young men
feel hypersonic aerodynamics is

“where the action is,” Savage is
content to devote his energies to
subsonic problems.
“People tend to forget that
planes have to go subsonic before
they can go hypersonic—and they
must again go subsonic to land,”
he observes.
Savage’s assistantship does not
require that he fly. “It’s just
something I like to do,” he points
out, “and it’s a means of con
tributing to the program.”
He hopes to make aviation re
search a career, beginning with a
two-year tour as an Army lieu
tenant after receiving his mas
ter’s next spring.
Savage is not what you would
call a seasoned pilot. In fact, he
has only been flying slightly more
than a year.
“There’s a few times you could
get in trouble if you didn’t know
what you were doing,” he admits.

The kids in the grandstand are yelling, “Strike him out!” and our
young pitcher is going to do exactly that. This is his day for a shut-out
game ... his day to win.
He's feeling pretty good about it, and who's to blame him? But what
if things had gone the other way? What if some other boy had
been warming up in the bullpen, about to have taken his place? But
he is a well-balanced youngster, and he would have taken that
in stride, too.
He has learned about being a good sport, about regard for his fellow
men, and about many other equally important things in Church.
For, like thousands of other American youngsters, the Church already
plays an important part in his life. That is one reason why his parents
have faith in the fact that he will grow up to be a pretty fine man.
